Gift ideas and upcoming concerts

(sent via email Dec. 11)

Happy Holidays!

Gift Ideas
One idea for you for stocking stuffers for students is tickets to the remaining Oregon Symphony in Salem concerts - for only $10 each, you can pick up guaranteed good seats for students. There are some amazing concerts this year - including the Midori concert! Here are the dates for the remaining OR Symphony in Salem: Feb. 22, Apr 13 (Zukerman!), Apr 13 (Midori!), Apr 19 (Pops), May 25 (Mahler's Titan) - these concerts are at 8pm on Monday or Tuesday evening, but in my opinion these are some of the very best concerts students (and parents) can go see in town!! Call the OR Symphony in Salem box office for more info: 503-364-0149 - consider getting 2 student tickets so students can bring a friend??

Another gift idea is to consider the accessories in and around instruments - Jade rosin, a better shoulder rest, new set of great strings, new bow, great case - there are many ideas. Check at Weathers Music locally or shop online at www.sharmusic.com or www.swstrings.com for more ideas. I would be happy to help you choose some accessories for your student - tailored to your budget and student need. For example, check out this fun option for violinists - Colored Hair bows: http://www.swstrings.com/catalog/showBowGroup.jsp?groupId=203C&subcategory=Violin

Concerts
There are 2 great local concerts this weekend that would be excellent opportunites for student reviews (remember, each student needs to complete one live concert review by mid January):

Salem Youth Symphony - Dec. 13, 3pm at Smith Hall at Willamette: for more info - http://www.salemyouthsymphony.org/concerts - tickets are $12 for adults, $5 for students.

South Salem Orchestras at the Abbey - A Winter concert presented by our colleagues at South Salem High School. Concert at 2pm on Saturday Dec. 12 - concert is free for all.

And, for all Sinfonietta and String Orchestra students, you may review our Winter At West concerts on Wed Dec. 16 and Thur Dec. 17 of this next week - concerts are at 7pm. Tickets are $3 for students, $5 for adults - reserved tickets can be purchased at the bookkeeper's office.

Thanks

Thanks to all parents and students in String Orchestra, Sinfonietta and Symphony. Your concerts this past week went beautifully well! Your hard work has paid off!! Videos and/or recorded versions of our concerts should be up on our website soon.
Musically yours,

Blogging about the String Orchestra Portland Trip

Hi all,

What fun we had up in Portland yesterday, Dec. 9, for the String Orchestra Portland and Lancaster Mall performance trip!

After finding out that we were to be 2 students down (one down with a fever, ugh!) we dutifully left at 8am all dressed in black, riding in a luxurious Coachways bus up to Portland. We got to the Children's Museum in Portland right on time. The "Play It Again Theatre" is adorable - a lovely little theatre with colorful lights and a tiered amphitheater-like seating arrangement. There was a live action camera projecting the performance on screens throughout the Museum... so we could watch ourselves. We donned our holiday gear (elf hats and scarves) and welcomed a ton of little people with their parents and grandparents - there had to have been 50 people, young and old, in the auditorium. We played Carol of the Bells, Up on the Housetop, Ding Dong Merrily on High, Deck the Halls, and the ever popular Jingle Bells and then invited the little ones to come up to see the instruments. It was a huge success (and, might I say, String Orchestra sounded better than ever!)

Then we changed clothes, hopped on the bus and our next stop was the beautiful Hatfield Performing Theatre in Portland. There we met our tour guide Sharon who showed us this beautiful theatre in the round lobby, a wild piece of artwork on the wall (ask anyone in String Orchestra - that painting was neat!), and then walked over to the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. This hall was built during the depression in a very gaudy, elaborate style. We got a full tour of the lobbies and inside the hall. We even got to see the Choir loft and the pit (both not usually visible when you go see the OR symphony there) as they were preparing for "Gospel Christmas". After checking out the amazing faux marble on the walls in the lobby, we hopped back on the bus for the Lloyd Center.

We ate lunch at the mall and then headed down to the ice rink - everyone of us put on our skates and hit the ice. Amazing! You should have seen Devin, Shantel, Chelsea, Shannon, Paige, Miranda, Crystal, Ashley G.(and her mom Angela who'd also never skated before!!!) and everyone else giving the ice their best shot. Some only got around a few times, some were begging for more by the time we had to leave at 1:30. It was neat to see this group happily attempting something different... great experience!

A quick bus ride down to Salem and then it was time for the Lancaster Mall. We played for 30 minutes across from Starbucks on the Burlington Coat Factory side of the Mall. We had anywhere from 30 - 40 people sitting or standing to listen to us. Standing on risers, we were able to play as a big group (we had thought we might have needed to pare down to smaller groups, but we managed to figure out how to play on risers like a choir) and made it through all our holiday music (all the songs listed above and more holiday carols). Then our fun day was over.

The only tragedy was that the big bass got a big crack in it - it apparently didn't like the combination of the cold air, soft case, and being put on a bus. But, we'll get that fixed up - and, considering we had great performances, a neat tour of a Portland musical landmard, and got to ice skate together (without any accidents!!) I'd say the day was a grand success!

Huge thanks for Angela for being our chaperone and to boosters for helping support this trip. I think this tradition of taking String Orchestra up and out for performing during the holidays overs great breadth to our orchestra program - and a nice opportunity for annual success!

No Symphony Friday 12/4

This email was sent 12/1:

Hi Symphony folks (sorry if you're not in symphony but got this email...)

No Symphony rehearsal on Friday - between having few or no winds because of pep band, being down string players who are in band, and knowing that a lot of kids want to go on the bus up to Portland for the semi-final playoff game, we're canceling Symphony rehearsal on this Friday. This is a credit, graded class, so we'll be having to make up this time along the way - probably in February as we get ready for the Carlos Kalmar visit. If you are around (not going to the game) we could *REALLY* use your help unloading wreaths and poinsettias - we were going to have symphony kids help unload at 4:30 on Friday... if you can come back to school or stick around to help, it would fantastic!!!! (Especially if you benefited from this sale... ?)

Next Tuesday's symphony rehearsal (12/8) is considered the MANDATORY DRESS REHEARSAL - be prepared - we will probably call a slightly longer rehearsal (either starting a little earlier or running a little later). Dr. Nail and I are very conscious that there are a lot of concerts and sports obligations these next few weeks - but we want to have you students as prepared as possible for your concert on the 10th!

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE - and, oh, did I mention PLEASE listen to these symphony pieces as much as possible - how about once a day??? You can listen online at our website - www.titanorchestras.com - and/or get a copy of these pieces (I have a CD you could borrow and/or bring a memory stick to school and I'll give you a copy) for your mp3 player. We're definitely a little short on rehearsal time... but if you listen, and practice, I think we'll be fine for the 10th.

Thanks for all your hard work! GO TITANS!!
~Ms. S and Dr. Nail

Statesman Journal article about Mr. Leyden's visit

October 28, 2009

Musician's visit excites young players

Karin Holton

I really don't know who had the bigger thrill when Norman Leyden recently visited West Salem High School as part of the Oregon Symphony Association in Salem's Educational Program. He was there to work with their Sinfonietta on "Serenade for Strings," a piece he composed for a junior group of the Westchester Youth Symphony more than 40 years ago.

West Salem's orchestra director, Daryl Silberman, was excited.

The students were not sure what to expect, but they had the music prepared and were ready to learn.

Leyden was a little tentative but still enthusiastic about working with these young musicians.

Although I am familiar with Leyden's work with the Oregon Symphony, it was the first time I actually met him. He is very quiet and unassuming normally, but put a conductor's baton in his hand, he is quite a commanding presence.

He had just celebrated his 92nd birthday, and I am certain that he has inspired many young musicians, myself included. But I am just as certain that these students have inspired him.

Madi W., a ninth-grade violinist said, "It was a great experience to meet the person who writes our music. Seeing Mr. Leyden inspired me and made me realize that music is something I can enjoy my whole life."

As I walked out with of the school with Leyden, I noticed his smile was a little bigger.

As we got in the car, he said "Now I am invigorated. I got a little exercise. I had a little fun, and I got to play some music. Let's do it again."

Visit www.artsmartsalem.org for a listing of events for the current month and remember, "There's Something to do in Salem."

Karin Holton is executive director of ArtSmart. Contact her through info@artsmartsalem.org.

CO Retreat Sunday - we're home

I *think* some kids slept (well, I heard that a few fell asleep on a bed - ended up 3 to the bed on a double...) but they looked a little tired this morning. The smell of nut rolls and cinnamon buns woke everyone up and after a little free time we hit the rehearsal room for a last 2 hours of Vivaldi. At 11:15 we performed for the parents (this piece is so neat! We did a ton of work this weekend!) and then it was time to pack it up and clean it up.

Lunch was yummy - grilled sandwiches and leftovers. A little free time (beach, paddle boat on the lake, a last Snack Attack run) and it was time to clean it all up and head on home. We hit 40 minutes delay because of a turned over truck on the 2 lane highway (apparently regulars out to the coast say this is something you always have to account for regarding travel time) but made it back only about 20 minutes late.

Thanks again to everyone who organized this, drove this, kept it running on time, and to all the kids who really showed me their Titan Orchestra spirit!

See you all Tuesday evening at our concert... hope to impress you there!
Musically yours,
~Ms S

CO Retreat Saturday

Ok, so, there are days in Oregon you thank goodness you're here - this is one of those days. IT WAS SO BEAUTIFUL HERE TODAY - sunny, calm, not too cold, not hot.

Breakfast was yummy - apparently Mark Lowen is a masterful pancake shaper - after making many rounds of circular pancakes, the bunnies, turtles, peace signs, and dragons starting making their appearances!

Our 3 hour rehearsal in the morning got us through the Vivaldi - the piece we came out here to rehearse. We are cobbling together 2 different editions of the Vivaldi to ensure that all have soloistic parts (you'll see/hear on Tuesday). It's working really well!

Lunch was soup and bread - it was a totally enlightened idea to bring crock pots!

Then the kids, after free time, did a scavenger hunt around town, chauffeured around town by the chaperones. The winning team won a bag of lovelies from the Dollar Store. Fun times!!!

The afternoon rehearsal focused on sections working out their Vivaldi parts. Also, we did a read through of Barber's Adagio - a favorite for the "State Repertoire" list.

Dinner at McMenamins was delightful - Ed John and his wife Carol joined us for dinner. Now we're back at Dunlap Manor - the fire pit is glowing, some kids are at the beach (many are wearing their costumes... we've got some hippies, a bumblebee, and characters from Alice In Wonderland), and others are playing games while we smell the brownies baking.

We'll touch base with you tomorrow before our last rehearsal.
~Ms S

CO Lincoln City Retreat Day 1 - Friday

After a brief delay actually leaving, we blasted out to the beach in record time. The trailer the Tatmans provided for all the instruments and bags is HUGE! We could have transported the entire orchestra with us... wow!

The Dunlap Manor is so great - comfy with 26 teenagers and a few adults. Right on the "D" River (the shortest river in the world - or states or something - it connects Devils Lake to the Pacific Ocean), the lodge is campy and rustic feeling.

Next door is the old yacht club, built in the 50's as a social hall - it'll be perfect for 7 hours of rehearsing on this retreat!

A delicious pizza (Gallucci's) and salad dinner and a trip to the beach (it was clear and beautiful last night) = happy teens! Amazingly, there was a homework table in operation for an hour or two... I *think* a few students actually ended up finishing some homework. Bed and/or sleep happened 'round midnight.

Right now, the pancakes are firing up, grapes are ready, yoga's about to begin on the deck, and kiddos are slowly waking.

If you want to see where we are, go to maps.google.com - enter the address: 1301 SE First St., Lincoln City - click on Satellite and look for this place. From the main street (highway 101) it's the 4th building in from the beach.

Thanks again to all the amazing parents who put all this together! More blogging later... :)

5pm - Symphony
6:15 - ALL STUDENTS MUST BE DRESSED, INSTRUMENTS READY, IN THE AUDITORIUM
6:50 - Doors open to the auditorium for audience members
7pm - Concert

PARENTS - we still could use a few parents to help out on Tuesday evening - these concerts don't happen without your help! Please contact Kelly Culver - kculver@comcast.net - if you are interested in helping out.

Dress attire has been outlined in previous emails - please look back to Newsletter #4 for more information!

3) Don't forget that I use the blog to post other information of interest to both students and parents. For example, I posted a link to the Serenade Triste that we'll be playing in Chamber Orchestra. Please bookmark the website and/or blog and check often. Thanks

4) All students are required to attend one live concert of professional and/or professional-quality musicians each semester. I suggest attending Salem Chamber Orchestra or Oregon Symphony concerts, but there are many other options. Students can see the review requirements on the Student page of our website - www.titanorchestras.com. I've supplied students with the guidelines and sample reviews. These are due 2 weeks before the end of the semester. Reviews must be typed and/or emailed to me (silberman_daryl@salkeiz.k12.or.us)

5) Performances for December are changing a little. Chamber Orchestra is still performing with the choirs on Dec. 16 and 17 and Symphony is still performing on the Band Concert Dec. 10. But, now Sinfonietta will also perform on the Band concert Dec. 10. String Orchestra will be performing at Lancaster Mall on December 9 at 12:30pm - lunch time. We'll be 'on tour' that day... more information about that in later emails.

Also, members of the orchestras will be required to perform in public in the month December - I will be posting performance opportunities in the orchestra room during the month of November. Parents, I appreciate your help in getting our performers to their various locations - carpooling will most likely be necessary.

6) Entertainment Books and Wreaths/Poinsettias fundraisers end next week - Ebook money and unsold books are due Wednesday Oct. 28. Wreaths/Poinsettias money is due Oct. 30. Late money for Wreaths/Poinsettias will not be accepted.

I look forward to seeing you Tuesday evening!!!

Titan Concert Attire Information for Fall Concert
Mon, October 12, 2009 12:35:01 PMFrom: Daryl Silberman

Titan Orchestras Boosters News
This is the concert attire information for our first concert - Tuesday, OCT. 27, 7pm

We are in a transition stage with our concert dress - by our Winter concert, all students will have been issued official concert attire, but for this first concert we will practice our ability to dress appropriately for a professional music 'gig'. Here are the stipulations on dress:

Women - long black pants or long skirt (below the knee). Opaque (not see-through) black hose or socks. Black CLOSED TOE, FLATS - no heels more than 1/2 an inch (this is for your safety!!). All black top - at least 2 inches down the arm (no sleeveless). No jewelry other than posts in ears. Hair must be back off the face!

Men - long black dress slacks (no jeans, no cords). BLACK socks. Black Dress shoes - no vans/converse or sneakers. No cloth shoes - leather or pleather black dress shoes please. Long sleeve black dress shirt.

Black clothing should be 'dress up' quality - no t-shirt material. No grey, white, or printed black on shirts. No sequins, no shiny material... just, concert dress black.

IF STUDENTS WANT TO WEAR TITAN CONCERT CLOTHES (Tux for men, with white tux shirt, cummerbun, bow tie - black concert dress for women) you may wear that if that's easiest. For those who don't have those issued to them - see Ms S after school before the day of the concert.

I frequent resale and consignment stores - if you receive free or reduced lunch, I'm happy to pick up clothing for you. If you would simply like me to look for appropriate clothing for you and you can pay me back, please let me know. I don't wish this attire policy to be a burden - either financially or psychologically. I'm happy to help out!

For the Winter concerts, String Orchestra and Sinfonietta students WILL be issued the current Titan concert attire - Chamber Orchestra is getting new clothing.

If there are *ANY* questions, please let me know - if students are not appropriately attired for the concert, they may not play - and they will not get credit for the performance.
~Ms. S

Newsletter #5

In this newsletter (emailed 10/8/09):

1) On Wednesday next week, no Sinfonietta sectionals - do some extra practice!
2) What's due?
3) Missed sectional - what should you do?
4) Practice logs *ARE* due on Monday
5) Composer Norman Leyden coming to West on Tuesday!!
6) CONCESSION STAND OPPORTUNITIES
7) Wreath/Poinsettias and Entertainment Book fundraisers ongoing

1) This next week we have a wild schedule
. School is done on Wednesday at 11:45, so it's rather impractical to have a 2:40 sectional. Sinfonietta - you're off the hook for sectionals... but, we'll have a test on your A Major bowings on Monday, so practice extra over the long weekend!

2) What's due? A surprising number of students have not turned in one or more of the following items that are PAST DUE:

Fair Use Fees
($20 string orch, $30 sinfonietta, $40 chamber)
Blue (or white) Permission slips (available online in the student section if you 'lost' yours)
Pink slips (handbook information)
$5.50 to me for Essential Elements
$$$ for the Chamber Orchestra retreat ($75 per student)

LET'S GET THIS STUFF IN!!! Thanks...

3) If you miss a sectional here's the new policy - EMAIL ME! I'll tell you what you missed. THEN YOU OWE ME A LUNCH - Wednesday or Friday A or B lunch. Come in, do your work, and you're good to go. But, only 'miss' a sectional once a month... otherwise, it could effect your grade... ok??!!! (If you are on contract - you need to come every other week during a lunch to catch up to your colleagues).

4) Just a reminder... practice logs are due on Mondays. PARENTS - I WILL BE SHARING STUDENT PRACTICE LOGS WITH YOU AT CONFERENCES AT THE END OF NOVEMBER! If you're not hearing any practicing, touch base with me and we discuss motivational techniques for getting students to practice... :)

5) Very exciting - this next Tuesday, Sinfonietta students have the honor of meeting and working with the composer of the piece they're working on: Serenade for String Orchestra by Norman Leyden. Mr. Leyden was the conductor of the Oregon Symphony Pops for years - he's a dynamic musician... if you're interested in seeing him work with the students, come to West at 1pm on Tuesday - should be a great workshop!

6) From Kelly Culver (your orchestra parent booster president):

We need student and parent volunteers to work in the Concession Stand on:
#1: Oct. 16, Friday 3:00p – 7:30p Boys & Girls Soccer (need 4 students/2 parents)
#2: Oct. 23, Friday 5:15p – 8:00p Girls Soccer (need 3 students)

For Chamber students, if you work on the 16th, it’ll go toward their retreat/trip fund. For other students it’s a great way to start saving for next year’s trip! Please sign up in the orchestra room or email Kelly Culver: kculver@comcast.net

7) Students were given Wreath and Poinsettia packets in class this week - this is a great fundraiser for all students in music. Students get a lot of the proceeds. This fundraiser runs through Oct. 30 - if you need another packet, please pick one up in the orchestra room!

Entertainment books are still selling... finishing on Oct. 28. Remember, Chamber Orchestra students can earn towards the retreat by selling books and turning in checks by Oct. 14.

The Dude - Mahler 1

So, in music circles everyone's getting excited about Gustavo Dudamel's premier concert with the Los Angeles Philharmonic - it's tonight and they're doing Mahler's 1st symphony. In class today Chamber and Sinfonietta hear Beethoven 5th (1st movement) conducted by "The Dude". He's a 28 year old conductor who came through the Argentinian system called "La Sistema". He's quite amazing and it's a pretty neat story.

Here's some info about tonight's concert, in case you're interested:

Newsletter #4 - sent through our new email service

If you are reading this post online but didn't receive it via email, please email Ms. s to let her know - silberman_daryl@salkeiz.k12.or.us - this week we sent our newsletter out via a different email delivery system.

Newsletter #4 for the Titan Orchestra program

Contained within:

1) What's due??? (Fair use, sectional/symphony contracts, permission slips)
2) What's going on in classes?
3) Entertainment Book fundraiser is still on...
4) Have you checked out the recordings on our website?

1) $5.50 - There are still students who owe Ms. Silberman $5.50 for Essential Elements - in Chamber Orchestra and Sinfonietta. Please bring that to me directly... thanks!

Fair use fees ($20 for String Orchestra, $30 for Sinfonietta, $40 for Chamber Orchestra - I MISTAKENLY PUT $50 IN THE EMAIL... sorry!) due for this year. Everyone in orchestra benefits from this fee!

"Blue Sheet" (or the Permission forms downloaded off the website) is due from each student!

Practice Journals/logs are due from each student on Mondays. This next week is a strange week - it starts with an "Even" day on Monday Oct. 5, so students in Sinfonietta will actually turn their log in to me on Tuesday - but it should only reflect practice through the 4th.

2) Here's a quick recap of what we're preparing and working on in classes:

Chamber Orchestra - memorizing the National Anthem. Playing the beautiful Serenade Triste by Cohen. Finishing up the Mozart Ave Verum that we'll be playing with Soundscape at our concert on the 27th. Our coaches have been coming in and we've worked etudes, scales, and a few pieces for our personal growth

Sinfonietta - We are getting ready for Mr. Norman Leyden to visit our school on October 13th to conduct us playing his Serenade for String Orchestra. This 4 movement piece has a little something for everyone and the orchestra is sounding really good! Ms. Ward has come in to work the cellos and bass once and will be coming again next week.

String Orchestra - We are working a choral piece called St. Denio - it's in 2 keys which is a bit challenging, but we're doing well! We're also working out of the green books and warmup books in the room - we've worked C Major, G Major and D Major scales. Principal Ed John came in and we played Dona Nobis Pacem for him, quite successfully I might add.

Symphony
- we are playing 3 great pieces in symphony - a Psalm and Fugue by Alan Hovhaness, an arrangement of Grieg's In the Hall of the Mountain King (if you don't know it, you'll recognize it when you hear it!!), and a Bach prelude and fugue. It's fun to work with this concentrated and combined string group. In November we'll welcome the band students and begin the big symphony rehearsals.

3) The Entertainment Book fundraiser is still ongoing. Books are $20 each - the coupons from Safeway and/or the French Press coupon helps to pay for the books right away! ALL TITAN ORCHESTRA MEMBERS ARE WELCOME TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS FUNDRAISER!!!

4)If you go to our newly renovated website: www.titanorchestras.com and go to the library page. On the left there is a link to "recordings" - click there and you can listen to many of the pieces we'll be playing at the next concert... and a few extra pieces for fun.

Newsletter #3

Sent 9/24/09

Hi all - contained in this email:

1) Fair Use Fee due
2) "Blue Sheet" - Treat and Travel Permission slips due
3) $5.50 due for some students
4) This might be the last newsletter from this email account
5) Notes from Parent Meeting
6) Have you checked out the website???
7) All State recording next week

1) As explained at the parent meeting, there is a Fair Use Fee that is being assessed for all students in the performing arts at West (including band and choir). The orchestra fee will be used for big ticket items that we don't otherwise fundraise for - this year we're hoping to buy a harpsichord for the orchestra room - to be used with all groups when playing music of the Baroque era (like Vivaldi, Corelli, and Bach). The fees are as follows:

String Orchestra students $20
Sinfonietta students $30
Chamber Orchestra students $40

Checks can be made out to WSHS Music Boosters and students can put checks into the beige envelopes above the 'grey box' in the orchestra room - ask Ms. S for help. Those who receive free or reduced lunch and other who have financial hardship may contact Ms. S to waiver-out (as long as students participate in other fundraisers and/or parents/students volunteer time).

2) Blue Sheets were handed out at the Parent Meeting and to students in class - this is the 'Treat and Travel' permission form that needs to be on file in the orchestra office. Please note that this is a 2 sided or 2 page document and both sides need to be filled out. If you need another copy, students may either request one in class or you can go to our website: www.titanorchestras.com, to the student page, and to the downloadable forms - print and fill out the document. This form is due next week!!!

3) Students who have received Essential Elements (intermediate or advanced) owe Ms. S $5.50 for the book - please bring cash or a check (made out to Daryl Silberman) to class. Students know if they owe or not (if there is any question, please touch base).

4) Thanks to long hours put in by Karen and Steve Tatman, we will have a new email list delivery system - you should have received a test email yesterday. Please click on the "update your profile" link on that email so that we have all the correct information about you. If for some reason you stop receiving emails, please check your spam filter so that you can continue to receive these weekly emails.

5) Notes from Parent Meeting are up on the blog and on the parent page on our website. Here are links:

http://titanorchestras.blogspot.com/2009/09/parent-meeting-notes.html

www.titanorchestras.com - click on the Parents page

6) Please bookmark our groovy cool new website - titanorchestras.com. It has a lot of information there - including the new '09-10 handbook. Remember that students may use the computer in the orchestra room if they need web access. This website is intended to be the go-to place for information for our program. Please let Ms. S. know if something doesn't look right or if you have suggestions for items you'd like to see on the website. Huge thanks to the Tatmans for all their time getting this website up and running!!!

7) All State auditioners - let's record your material this next week so we have plenty of time to re-record if need be. The recording equipment is ready to go as of Friday afternoon. Good Luck!

**Student - remember - practice logs/journals are due on Mondays: String Orchestra - 60 mins per week, Sinfonietta - 100 mins per week - Chamber Orchestra - 180 mins per week. Keep a log on binder paper - note what day you practice, what you practiced and how you did, and how long you practiced. This is for you to be able to track your progress and to notate your successes!

Parent Meeting notes

Notes from the Parent Meeting:

1) Chamber Orchestra members performed the National Anthem
2) Email is the main form of communication, but anytime someone would like to meet in person, please contact Daryl. A paper copy of each Newsletter will be posted in the orchestra room for students who don't check email regularly.
3) FAIR USE FEE - this new fee will be asked of each student in the Titan Orchestra program in the following amounts (check made payable to WSHS Music Boosters):
String Orchestra - $20
Sinfonietta - $30
Chamber Orchestra - $40
This fee will be collected and saved for big purchases - bow replacement, harpsichord, new performance outfits. Fee is due by the end of October - special arrangements can be made for those who are financially unable to contribute.
4) Website has been updated - please bookmark this page and refer to it often for concert dates, assignments, downloadable forms, and more:
www.titanorchestras.com
5) This year, the handbook can be viewed or printed out from the website. Any parent or student who requests a printed copy may receive one.
6) All students are required to complete one live concert review each semester - Daryl would prefer this to be from a classical symphonic organization, but it can be any concert involving stringed instruments.
7) Chamber Orchestra has new requirements this year - see the Student section of the website for more information. If any parents have questions about the commitment requirements, please contact Daryl directly.
8) Grading Policy - all students walk in the door with the right to earn an "A" grade. The following can cause a lowering of the A grade: not completing assignments and/or concert reviews, habitual missing of sectionals or rehearsals, poor attitude or work ethic in class, evidence of no practice. Students will be versed on this policy - parents are welcome to touch base with Daryl for clarification.
9) Sectionals are considered mandatory - please see the website for sectional times. Students who miss must make up the time by practicing extra.
10) Trips this year - Chamber Orchestra is going to the coast in October, Sinfonietta and String Orchestra may go to Portland in December.
11) Salem-Keizer Invitational Band and Orchestra Festival is here at West again - April 16 and 17, 2010. Orchestra students and parents 'run' the band day - Friday the 16th - any and all parent volunteers are welcome! Students will be 'required' to help that day.
12) Summer Strings will be at Leslie this summer - West students will help run this camp. Boot Camp dates will be announced in January or at the latest February - please make arrangements to have your student in town for Boot Camp.
13) Parent Booster Meetings will occur monthly on the 2nd Tuesday of the Month - all parents are invited to attend these important meetings. Contact Kelly Culver at kculver@comcast.net if you are available to volunteer for any of our important parent-run volunteer positions.

Thanks to all who attended. To those who didn't attend, your child will bring home the "Permission to treat" form or you can download it from our webpage - this completed form must be returned to Ms. Silberman by October 1.

Newsletter #2

(Email sent 9/18/09):

1) Parent meeting 7pm Monday Sept. 21, West auditorium - (at least 1 parent per student)
2) SCO this weekend - ticket offer
3) Sectional schedule and practice
4) Website will roll out this next week
5) Requirements for class = Binder and Music book
6) Appeal for extra violins...

1) Parents - please plan on attending the meeting on this next Monday - Sept. 21 7pm. It is here that I will discuss orchestra requirements, go over the concert schedule, make announcements of school policy changes, and our parent organization president will outline parent volunteer opportunites. PLEASE SEND A PARENT/ADULT REPRESENTATIVE FROM EACH STUDENT/FAMILY - there will be forms to fill out and information shared about upcoming events. IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO ATTEND, meeting notes will be up on the blog the next day and any forms handed out can be downloaded off the website or handed out in class. The meeting will adjourn by 8pm.

**ALL AVAILABLE CHAMBER ORCHESTRA MEMBERS - please plan on meeting in the orchestra room at 6:45pm to tune up and warm up - you start the meeting by performing... details in class on Monday.

After the parent meeting (ending at 8pm) there will be a College Night information session - one of our counselors will be available and I will outline musical opportunities (scholarships, degree offerings, scope of music schools in the country) for all interested. Seniors and Juniors, you are encouraged to attend this part of the meeting - we need to get going on recommendations and letters to prospective music departments/professors.

2) The Salem Chamber Orchestra performs this weekend - a separate email was sent earlier this week. If you need comp tickets, please contact me by 5pm today and I should be able to get them for you - otherwise, I hope to see you there (at the Elsinore on Saturday evening or the Oregon Gardens Sunday afternoon).

More info: www.salemchamberorchestra.org - student tickets are $5 at the door

3) The sectional schedule is posted on the blog: www.titanorchestras.blogspot.com - these are considered mandatory - if students contract out because of work or sports, they are still required to cover the material.

Here are the expectations of practice at home for an "A" student in orchestra (practice is described as quality time with one's instrument - not lesson time or sectional time... time alone at home or school practice room with an instrument):

String Orchestra - 60 minutes per week
Sinfonietta - 100 minutes per week
Chamber Orchestra - 180 minutes per week

Parents, if you aren't hearing that much music in your household and would like me to meet with your son/daughter to have a time-management session, I'd be happy to. We are outlining our daily/weekly schedules in class over this next week so that students can work their practice time into their schedules.

4) Our website: www.titanorchestras.com - is being updated and should be ready to launch in the next few days. On this website you'll find a ton of information and an active link to the blog. Assignments, handbooks, forms, parent information, calendar, libraries of picture, videos and music and much more will be on this site. PLEASE BE SURE TO BOOKMARK THIS SITE. Huge thanks to parent Steve Tatman for all your hard work updating this site!

5) All students need a 1" binder, sheet protectors, and separators to keep in class. Also, each orchestra will have a requirement to obtain a method book - Essential Elements - students will have that information. The books are $5.50 each and I will pick them up - students just need to pay me to get their copy. If finances are an issue, let me know and we'll see what we can work out. This is an effort to make sure that everyone is working on the same material.

6) We have a few families in need of a violin for practice at home - if anyone sees a violin in good condition at a consignment or resale shop (Goodwill, St. Paul de Vincent, Humane Society) or at a garage sale and it doesn't seem to need much work, please let me know - sometimes there are real gems out there just waiting to be discovered. Thanks!

The orchestras sound really great this year - thanks to you students for these past 2 weeks of getting organized and ready to go. Now we start buckling down, practicing, and getting ready for our first performance on October 27.

See you Monday night!
~Daryl S.

Sinfonietta

From an email 9/15/09:

Hi all,

Quickly, just wanted remind you that all Sinfonietta students need to bring a 1" to keep at school - if you're the type that like page protectors for you music (preferred) please bring a bunch of those too. You need to have 2 separators in the binder (for music and practice logs). If you need assistance obtaining these materials (free/reduced lunch or other need) please contact me at school and I'll see what I can work out.

Also, there are about 22 of you for whom I'm picking up copies of Essential Elements Intermediate (the green book) at Weathers - the cost is $5.50 each - checks can be made out to WHSH... cash needs to be exact or $6 (I have quarters). Those books will be in Thursday afternoon - if you'd like to have your book (you know who you are if you ordered one) over the weekend (a great idea for practicing) come by the orchestra room on Friday.

*Sinfonietta sectional rehearsal WEDNESDAY afternoon 2:40 - 3:30 - (C Scale, Syncopated Clock, Serenade CakeWalk)

REMINDER - Monday parent meeting 7pm - West auditorium... see you then!

Music Day Thank Yous... and more

(emailed 9/13/09)
MUSIC DAY Thank yous:

Students who walked
- THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for trudging through 90 degree heat, wearing black no less, and interacting with everything from the strange to the sublime in our community... I loved the stories I heard from you - of people driving around to find you to donate, to funny people not understanding what you were there for. Keep the stories coming - especially the funny ones! I left West mid-day and saw the Music Day folks for South and Sprague canvassing their communities too - we're so fortunate to live in a city where music is strongly supported! IF YOU DIDN'T REGISTER YOUR DRESS OR TUX AND YOU TOOK IT HOME, MAKE SURE YOU BRING THE INFORMATION ABOUT WHICH ONE YOU HAVE TO SCHOOL WITH YOU ON MONDAY - thanks.

Students who worked the room - yay! The room will work so much better now! Thank you for doing the inventory and organizing the music/composition book area... and, thanks too for helping me figure out how to set standards for practice today.

Parents who drove and helped (Lowen, Culver, Svadlenak, Hanson, Nokes, Tatman, Chong, McCauley, Wells) - Amazing! We couldn't have done this without you!! Thank you for hours of your work and for protecting our orchestra members - and for keeping our kids air conditioned when they weren't walking!!

Chamber Orchestra Students - What fun! The mini-retreat was not only yummy, but really enjoyable! Thanks for being so neat!!!

Kiara and Wendy Bruton - your place is amazing! Thank you for hosting our retreat!!

To students who weren't able to join us - we look forward to your hours of volunteer service... you missed some great times and funny stories... try to touch base with your friends to find out how it all went.

ENTERTAINMENT BOOKS (Portland or Greater OR) ARE AVAILABLE - students may check them out during class. Books are $20. Students will receive $7 to $9 per book into their student account - that money can be used for going on trips (big trip planned for 2011).

SAVE THE DATE:

Newsletter #1

Hi! Happy start of school!

Here's the official newsletter #1 for the Titan Orchestra program:

1) Music Day is this Saturday - thanks in advance for your support!
2) Save the date - Parent meeting, first concert
3) New website is rolling out soon... yay!
4) Syllabus and handbook coming soon
5) Practicing should begin this next week...
6) Sectionals and after school Symphony begin next week

1) Music Day - a district-wide band or music day for all the high schools - is this Saturday, Sept. 12 from 8am - 3:30pm. I deeply appreciate the help of all the 10th-12th grade students and all the parents who will be volunteering hours of time to help us fund-raise. This fundraiser benefits the entire music department, but most importantly (to us) supports the Titan Orchestra program because of how many of our students and parents go out into the community to ask for donations. There is only so much the school district and West High School can provide our music program - especially in this economy. Asking the community to support music in our schools is a luxury for which we're very grateful. Some of the examples of where Music Day money has benefited the Titan Orchestra program: Special guest artists, coaches for sectionals and on days Ms. Silberman isn't able to be at school, special instrument purchases not supported by the district (like electric instruments and extra instruments for students to borrow), recordings for us to listen to, receptions for and expenses involved in producing concerts, website maintenance, and so much more...

10th-12th grade students and drivers (thanks again!!!) who are signed up to walk or work should arrive by 8am. Lunch and snack will be provided. If you will be home Saturday, and a music student (band, choir or orch) should knock on your door - please consider donating. :)

2) Save the dates:

Monday Sept. 21, 7pm - "Mandatory" Parent meeting - I'd love it if at least one parent from each student was able to be in attendance at this meeting. This is my opportunity to touch base with you and fill you in on the plans for the year. Students are welcome. After, at 8pm, there will be a college information evening, specific to orchestra students - one of our counselors from West will be on hand and there will be a lot of information available courtesy of the Career Center at West.

Tuesday Oct. 27, 7pm - Fall Concert at West Auditorium. See you then for our first concert!

3) We will be rolling out our new website (same address: www.titanorchestras.com) in the next week or two - this website will be comprehensive - all the handbook and syllabus information, as well as all documents, assignments, listening libraries, photo libraries, and the blog (yes, the blog is going to move eventually to this site) will be on the website - more about that in the coming week or two...

4) The requirements and syllabus for each class, as well as the student/parent handbook for 2009-2010 is almost finished up. We've been waiting for a few last minute details and calendar issues to be worked out. This year, in an effort to 'go green', the handbook will be put online for perusal - students/parents will be asked to download a form from our website to fill out stating that the handbook has been read. If anyone wishes to have a hard copy of the handbook, one can be provided.

5) There isn't a lot of 'homework' per se for a performance-based orchestra class, because practice *is* our homework. Here are the 'requirements' for students in our program - starting next week students will be required to fill out a practice log or journal documenting their practice time:

String Orchestra - 60 minutes per week
Sinfonietta - 100 minutes per week
Chamber Orchestra - ~180 minutes per week

Hopefully, approximately 85 homes in West Salem should be ringing with the 'sound of music' as students get to practicing to improve their musicianship and technique. :)

6) Here are sectional times and symphony times that start next week:

Advanced Symphony (all Chamber Orchestra members and interested/qualified Sinfonietta members): Tuesday 4-6pm, Friday 2:40 - 4:30pm
Chamber Orchestra - Violins Monday 2:40 - 3:30, Violas Tuesdays 2:40 - 3:30, Celli and bass Thursdays 2:40 - 3:30
Sinfonietta - all students Wednesdays 2:40 - 3:30
String Orchestra - all students Tuesdays 2:40 - 3:30

Sectionals are mandatory - this is stipulated as a condition of enrollment in class. Students may 'contract' out of sectionals during sports seasons or due to other unresolvable conflicts... please contact Ms. Silberman for more information about that.

Finale - this year looks to be a fantastic year - our orchestras are well balanced and seem to be very musical! I'm very excited about working with everyone this year. I can't believe that I'm excited now about the October concert! :)

Start of the 2009-2010 year

Hi Titan Orchestra members, family, and fans!

This year's group looks to be amazing - talented freshman entering our ranks... strong and balanced orchestras in each of our groups... lots of great performance and recording opportunities! A few things:

Entertainment books
- $4 for each book go to students this year... the other $2-4 goes to Boosters to help fund sectional coaches. Ebooks kicks off the first week of school - more info's coming your way!

Music Day - Sept. 12 - this is considered a mandatory event for all 10th-12th grade students in the Titan Orchestra program. I deeply appreciate your help with this endeavor!

New website's coming your way - currently www.titanorchestras.com is a bit of a static situation, but we're working hard on the newly renovated site... hopefully we'll 'roll' that out in the next few weeks! There will be tons of information stored on that site - calendars, recordings, pictures, handbook, forms, etc...

Pencils - in the spirit of "Back To School" please pick up an extra pack of pencils for the orchestra room this year. The students will tell you, I just hate running out of pencils - and, boy, do we use a lot of them!! Thanks for your contribution!

Save the Date - Mandatory Parent Meeting... September 21, 7pm. There will be general information at 7pm, followed by a very special college information for 10th - 12th grade parents and students.

Here's to a wonderfully musical year!
Musically yours,
~Daryl Silberman

Thursday Boot Camp

Ron Kilde!!!! Wow - what a treasure Salem has! Ron is an incredible jazz violinist, and has a great personality to boot. Ron brought his band to West Salem to play for us today; Trumpeter Paul La Freniere, Guitarist Larry Fleetwood, and upright Bassist Roger Webster. The played favorites including Lady Be Good, a Fiddler on the Roof medley, and What a Wonderful Life. If you'd like to see them play live, go to Cascade Baking Co. on State Street downtown any Saturday late morning... they play there weekly.

Here's the orchestra recap:
String Orchestra - we played through another Harmonic exercise warmup - they did a great job on their own this time!!
Sinfonietta - we "got" the Syncopated Clock down!! What a fun piece to play together...
Chamber Orchestra - worked more intensely on Serenade Triste - and then enjoyed listening to, and following along the music to, Tchaikovsky Serenade - what a great piece!

Thanks to all who attended. I look forward to seeing everyone on the 8th and 9th of September - 2009-10 is looking like it's going to be a fantastic year for the Titan Orchestra program!!!

Wednesday - Boot Camp

Yoga - Yoga - Yoga - Yoga. Nothing warms my heart like a roomful of Titans doing yoga! We did yoga all together, en masse. We sun saluted, triangled, down dogged, and balanced - all to an eclectic mix of recorded music!

Today String Orchestra showed off their scale abilities, then read some music, with the assistance of some of the other orchestra students. Sinfonietta played chorales in small ensembles and tackled the Syncopated Clock again. Chamber Orchestra rose the the challenge of playing chamber music for one another - we heard Serenade Triste, a 2 violin/viola trio by Telemann, and Mozart's Eine Kliene Nachtmusik 1st movement as a trio.

I'm so excited about how well things are going!

Last day of Boot Camp Thursday...

Tuesday, August 25, 2009

Tuesday - Boot Camp

Now we're rollin'! Tuesday was fun!! String Orchestra deconstructed Rockin' Robin a little bit more. Sinfonietta did wonders with a Bach chorale and started in on Syncopated Clock (Leroy Anderson - the Zinn arrangement). Chamber Orchestra played Anderson's Blue Tango, an awesome new piece called Serenade Triste, and then we tackled a little bit of Tchaikowsky's Serenade, first movement (boy, do we love that piece!!!).

We had the pleasure of hearing Danny Seidenberg, Noah Seitz, and Chris Woitach play UnBande - interesting group. Here are some web links for them:

Chris Woitach - www.affmusic.com

Monday - Boot Camp

Wow - what a great start to Boot Camp! We tuned, we played, we listened, we chatted... good times! Thanks to graduated seniors Jessica T and Jessica P for coming to visit and play with us! We had Georgienne Young, Danny Seidenberg, and Susan Miller from Salem Baroque here to play Couperin, Leclair, Arne, and San Martini for us - it was really neat to hear the harpsichord and get into this very special performance practice.

To all those who didn't bring pencils or your check/cash - please bring that in ASAP.

Freshman - please bring your medical release form tomorrow!!!

See ya for Tuesday for UnBande and more playing!!

New Band Director and Assistant Band Director appointed!!!

In case you haven't been following the A-wing news at West, Mr. Griffith has resigned as assistant band director at West effective this past June and Dr. Nail will be leaving us as of the end of December. After an exhaustive search, we're very excited about the gentlemen we welcome to the A-wing: Todd Zimbleman - West band director as of January 4, 2010 - and Luke Warren - West assistant band director effective August 2009. Dr. Nail will co-conduct the symphony the months of November and December and Mr. Zimbleman will take over his responsibilities in January 2010 - I'm very excited to work with both Dr. Nail and Mr. Zimbleman this year!!!

The following is excerpted from the West Band newsletter:

August 2, 2009
Welcome to this season’s first Music Booster Newsleter!
New Band Director and Assistant Band Director Chosen

The West Salem High School Band Boosters is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Todd Zimbelman as our new Band Director. Mr. Zimbelman comes to us from Southridge High School in Beaverton where he has been Band Director for the last three years. Previously he was Band Director at Grants Pass High School and before that taught music at the University of Oregon. Not only did Mr. Zimbelman take Southridge to the number one position in the state in Marching Band, but he also took their Wind Ensemble to the number one position at the state finals this year. His ability to bring the most out in his students is one of the many reasons for his strong reputation as one of the premiere music educators in the state.

Dr. Nail, upon hearing this news, said that Mr. Zimbelman is an outstanding music educator and will continue to build upon our already strong reputation. He could not be more pleased with the choice as he holds Todd in very high regard. Ike welcomes Mr. Zimbelman and looks forward to working with him during the transition over the first half of the year.

Mr. Zimbelman will begin working with our Marching Band as soon as he can transition away from his duties at Southridge. Beginning with the start of the new school year, Mr. Zimbelman will be working as band director at Clagget Creek Middle School, filling in for their current band director who is going to be out on maternity leave. His official first day at West Salem High will be January 4, 2010. However, he will be working with our students during this transition period.

We are also pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Luke Warren as our new Assistant Band Director. Mr. Warren comes to us by way of Portland State University where he just completed his Masters Degree program in Music Education. Luke received his Bachelors in Music Performance on the bass trombone from the University of Oregon in 2004. Luke was not only a student of Mr. Zimbleman at U of O, but he also worked with him at Southridge as an assistant working with their marching band. Mr. Warren will be joining us in time to start working with our students during marching band camp. He will also be performing similar duties to those of Mr. Griffiths during the school year.

Check out another blog I'm keeping up...

If you're interested in seeing another side of musical life, you might be interested in following a blog I'm keeping for teachers and performers called "Alt Strings":

www.altstrings.blogspot.com

The term "Alternative Styles" is what string musicians call anything that's not strictly classical - so, that includes rock, blues, jazz, hip hop, funk, big band, swing, emo, etc... every genre you can imagine.

Before I was a teacher here at West, I was a clinician and a facilitator - helping teachers and players find ways of navigating the 'world' of alternative styles. My husband, Danny (whom many of you know), was the violist in an 'alternative style' string quartet - Turtle Island String Quartet - for 11 years and you know that I was in acoustic-folk rock groups when I was in LA, before coming here to Salem.

The blog will have artist profiles and interesting links on it... who knows, you just might find something interesting to explore if you check in there every now and then...

El Sistema

I don't know if you're heard about this system of orchestral and choir training, but in Venezuela, since 1975, there has been a vigorous training program for the young children of that country - mainly children from the poor and middle class - who are trained in a classical music tradition. The results have been phenomenal - Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra's newest director is a young man in this 20's who came from this program - called "El Sistema".

Here is video of Gustavo Dudamel conducting the Youth Orchestra of Venezuela - watch how much the kids move!!!

http://www.ted.com/talks/jose_abreu_on_kids_transformed_by_music.html

And, for anyone interested, here's the acceptance speech that the head director of El Sistema - Jose Abreu - gave upon receiving the TED prize last February:

I find this incredibly inspirational - hope you do too!

KAMA (Keizer Academy of Music and the Arts)

Our very own cello coach Noah Seitz and his pianist wife Sarah Greenleaf have started a new Academy in Keizer - this will be a great resource for those looking for lessons, rehearsal space, and chamber music. Here's the article from the SJ:

Teachers launch music and arts academy

Keizer center will offer classes, private lessons starting in August

By Jillian Daley
Statesman Journal

Two music teachers are raising the curtain on an arts academy in Keizer next month.

Parents can register their children or themselves online for Sara Greenleaf Seitz and Noah Seitz's Keizer Academy of Music & Arts, which will open Aug. 1. The grand opening will be Aug. 15.

A theater arts camp for kids that includes vocal and dance training is coming up next month as well, and classes start in September.

Classes and private lessons are available for all ages and fall into four main groups: music, dance, acting and visual arts.

"We want to make sure that there's quality, convenient, comprehensive arts education in Keizer," Greenleaf Seitz said. "That's our first goal. Our second goal is to integrate all of the arts, so if you have a piano student who wants to switch to guitar, they can easily do that within our school."

The aim of the academy is to complement Salem-Keizer School District's already successful music programs, Greenleaf Seitz said. Some fine arts-loving students just might need a little extra attention. Plus, she said, every community needs a dose of fine arts.

"It brings people together," she said.

What does the academy offer?

-The music classes are: theory/ear training, beginning guitar, preschool music, a children's choir as well as private lessons in piano, oboe, percussion, cello, violin, saxophone, clarinet, flute and voice.

-Acting courses are: acting for children, acting for teens, acting for adults and private acting lessons.

-Dance classes are: ballet classes grouped by age and skill level for ages 5 and older. Plus, 3- and 4-year-olds can take a special creative movement class.

-Visual arts classes are: an in-depth look at photography, collage making and photography basics.

All of the fine arts are forms of expression, Greenleaf Seitz said. And the fine arts afford children — and all people — something special.

"They need a structured way to express themselves," she said.

Costs vary, from $38 for one semester of the creative movement class to $167 a month for private music lessons from a master teacher, according to the Web site.

Scholarships will be available for two winners of an essay contest. A winner can have one year's worth of any class or a year's worth of private lessons — but of only one kind. For example, a winner could get lessons in guitar or acting, not both.

The essay question and instructions on how to apply for a scholarship should be on the academy's Web site this week.

Classes and lessons are just the beginning for the little academy, located on River Road N. Greenleaf Seitz and Seitz plan in the future to get accredited, create a fine arts high school and put on theater productions for the community.

The couple has 18 teachers on board. Two of them were easy to recruit: Greenleaf Seitz and Seitz.

Greenleaf Seitz is an instrumental staff accompanist at Linfield College, where she teaches piano. Piano will be her subject at the academy, too.

Seitz teaches cello at Pacific University in Forest Grove. At the academy, he will teach cello and guitar.

Seitz offered one reason for the couple's opening the academy while still shouldering their regular teaching positions.

"It was just to get out of the house," said the father of two.

Two of the first students at the academy will be the couple's daughters, Clara, 3; and Lilla, 6. Clara will take creative movement.

"I want to take acting and ballet," Lilla said.

Before the academy even has opened, she already is recommending it — and her parents.

"I think they're pretty amazing," she said.

Boot Camp info

Hi all. Here's a reminder of the info for Boot Camp:

Boot Camp is the week of August 24 - Monday through Thursday. This year, each newly formed orchestra will rehearse as a group during camp, so the times are as follows:

9 - 11:30am String Orchestra
10 - 12:30pm Sinfonietta (currently called Symphony Strings)
10 - 1:30pm Chamber (currently called Advanced Orchestra)

At 10am each day there will be a guest artist (Salem Baroque and UnBande are currently on tap) and a group musical event. The fee for camp is $40 - those on reduced or free lunch can receive a waiver of the fee in exchange for 4 hours of work time.

Boot Camp is a required event - this way all students can bond, plan leadership, and get the year off to a great start. Students are of course excused if they are involved with Band Camp or organized sports events. If there are any questions or concerns, please contact Ms. Silberman - silberman_daryl@salkeiz.k12.or.us or call my cell: 818-317-8218

Chamber Orchestra parents and students...

Hi,

Here's an update from the meeting tonight.

* We won't be going on the NOF tour to Santa Clara next February. Instead, we will look into the possibility of going to Sunriver or somewhere else somewhat local for a retreat - either chamber music or State competition music focused

* We will be looking into having Mark Wood (www.woodviolins.com) come to West Salem to do a clinic, possibly a benefit concert, with us in February of next year

* Reserve Saturday the 12th for a possible lock-in, chamber orchestra bonding day - this *IS* the day of Music Day... so, we'll get some work done for both boosters and for chamber orchestra

* If you are interested in helping out with any of the following booster positions, please contact Kelly Culver: kculver@comcast.net
-Waltz Night Coordinator
-Entertainment Book Coordinator (August - October)
-Wreath and Poinsettia Coordinator (October - December)
-Travel committee (we'll be meeting in July to work on the retreat)
-Fundraising committee (will meet in July to help set fundraisers for the following year)

Please keep an eye on the blog and look out for emails this summer!
Thanks,
~Daryl S.
