1) Thursday Jan 31 concert - 5:30pm!!!
On Thursday we have a very special concert. At 5:30 all students will perform with and then be treated to hearing the musicians from Music Beyond the Chamber. These musicians hail from Florida and California and are on tour in the Pacific Northwest this next week. Thanks to the Culvers and Tatmans, they will be hosted here in West Salem. On Thursday the 31st, all students in class will be coached by our guest musicians, and then they will perform together.  This concert and the daytime residency (coaching) is being paid for by the grant we received from the Salem Keizer Education Foundation this past fall. The concert time was moved back to accommodate our swimmers, who have a very important meet at South Salem High. Here is the schedule for the day:
Period 6 final - 7:30-8:55am
Period 7 final - 9:15-10:40am
Period 3 extra final - 11:30-1pm
Honors String Quartet extra rehearsal with MBTC - 1:30-2:30pm

Call time for Chamber (on stage to warmup) 4:45pm
Call time for Sinfonietta (on stage to warmup) 5pm
Call time for String Orchestra 5pm (orchestra room)

Concert time - 5:30pm.

Concert dress please (Chamber in Chamber outfits, everyone else in head to toe formal black attire, as per our concert dress code)


2) Music Beyond the Chamber
Tomorrow, students will be coached all day by musicians from Music Beyond the Chamber and guest violinist Caius Oprea. Caius is a graduate of the Julliard School of Music and is husband of one of our violin coaches - Sigrun. Jessica, Jessica and Lauren, from Music Beyond the Chamber are all experienced musicians and dedicated chamber artists. April 5 - WOU Orchestra Competition (Chamber, Sinf, Sym?)
April 13 – Salem-Keizer Orchestra Invitational (Chamber and Symphony)
April 24 - Instrument Sale at West (student and intermediate instruments for sale)
May 2 - Pre State Concert (qualified groups - Chamber, Symphony?)
May 3 - 4th Grade String Festival (Symphony students!)

May 9 – OSAA State Orch in Corvallis – Chamber,Symphony, if qualified
May 16 – Orchestras of the West (all students)
June 3 – Final Concert (Movie Theme!) and Senior Farewell

2) String Orchestra (period 3) extra final
All students in period 3 String Orchestra will be required to attend an extra rehearsal on Thursday January 31 from 11:30 - 1pm. This is so that they can be coached by our guest musicians and prepare for the concert in the evening. PLEASE MAKE SURE TO ARRANGE RIDES TO ASSURE THAT EVERYONE IS ATTENDANCE - this will be a graded rehearsal (final grade!).

3) Symphony schedule next week
There is no symphony on Tuesday or Thursday because of finals and the concert on the 31st. But there IS A SYMPHONY FINAL AT 11:30am ON WEDNESDAY THE 30th. All students are expected to attend in order to receive a 'final' grade! We will rehearse new and old pieces.

4) Last Chance "Live Review" podcast tomorrow
The day for the "last chance live review concert" was changed to Friday Jan 25 - tomorrow after school at 2:30. I will show a live podcast of the St. Olaf symphony orchestra winter concert. If a student is unable to attend this after school event, please email me tonight and I will send the link to the podcast in an email tomorrow - to be viewed by the student at home over the weekend. ONLY ESSAY REVIEWS WILL BE ACCEPTED FOR THIS CONCERT. Reviews, typed and turned in or emailed, must be turned in on Monday the 28th for full credit.

5) Get those Theory assignments and reviews in!
On Friday I will post current grades for all students. If students have not turned in Theory assignments, they will be accepted "late" up until Monday the 28th. Reviews of concerts seen in the past 2 weeks are due Monday Jan. 26 in class. Please check your intouch online gradebook and let me know if there are any concerns or issues with grades. The final project grade will be attendance and participation at the concert on the 31st.

1) Waltz Night in 2 days - Friday!!
On Friday is our biennial (every 2 years) event - Waltz Night, a "Black and White Evening." The evening begins at 6pm with everyone arriving. There are raffle items to check out ($1 raffle tickets available at the door) and dessert items available for purchase. At 6:30pm, everyone in attendance will receive a Waltz Lesson from a professional dance instructor (from Salem's RJ Dance Studios). After everyone has learned the steps, students going on the "Big Trip" will perform live Waltz Music for the rest of the evening. The Raffle will happen at the end of the evening, though you do not need to be in attendance to win. This is a wonderful event - please invite friends, neighbors, and loved ones! Students and parents, you have been sent emails requesting help with dessert items - please check your email. Students performing, you should know the schedule (check emails!). 3) Concert Tuesday - Symphony on the Band Concert
All Symphony students - as you know, you are performing on Tuesday at the Band Concert. Parents - you are welcome to join us at West at 7pm to hear the Symphony orchestra perform Rimsky-Korsakov's Dance of the Tumblers at the Band Concert. Symphony will perform first on the concert. Students will be required to stay to hear their band colleagues perform. Please consult the calendar for more detailed info about Tuesday's schedule.

4) Last Chance "Live Review" next Thursday
Calling all students who have not completed their Live Concert Review - next Thursday, Jan 24th at 2:30 in the orchestra room. We'll watch a podcast of a Live Concert from St. Olaf's University Orchestra where one of our alumni is performing in the top orchestra. We'll watch an hour of the concert and if you submit an essay review by Monday the 28th, the review will be accepted. There is also a live concert on Sunday the 27th you can attend, but it has a $20 ticket fee. REVIEWS ARE DUE BY MONDAY JANUARY 28!

5) Chamber Music concert Jan 31 - ALL STUDENTS
All students will be involved in a beautiful concert featuring the artists of Music From Beyond the Chamber on January 31. Right now, all students have embarked on a Chamber Music unit where they're learning a movement of a piece in small chamber groups. They'll be coached by our local Salem musicians for 3 weeks and then on January 31 all students will be coached by these national musicians. In the evening, the students with the Chamber Musicians will perform a concert at West at 7pm. Please make sure you've cleared your calendar to see this exciting concert! Students, please keep track of the calendar (on our website!).

Substitute newsletter (1/10/13)


Hi all,

Sorry - no fancy newsletter this week. Just a few things to remind you of:

1) Big Trip - payment is due tomorrow, Jan. 11. Please contact Geoff Winkler (see your emails) if there are any questions or concerns.

2) Symphony performs on the Band Concert - January 22, 7pm. 
All students perform at the Chamber Music Concert January 31 at 7pm.

3) Tomorrow, Friday Jan. 11, there is an Oregon Symphony concert in Salem at Smith Hall at Willamette University. There should be $5 student tickets available. Great concert  - a chance to see Andre Watts!! Please call the OR Sym office to confirm if there are tickets 503-364-0149

5) Waltz Night is January 18, 6-9pm. Tickets are now available. $10 for students or senior citizens. $15 for adults. $25 for a pair of adult tickets. . Parents - we will be having a bake sale and asking for donations. An email will go out about this in the next few days.
