Heavy Metal clinic article from SJ

Students get lesson in rockin' music
California band Judgement Day jams at high school
By Chris Hagan • Statesman Journal
April 16, 2008

The relaxing hum of orchestral tuning bounced off the walls of the auditorium at West Salem High School.

Nearly 40 students from multiple Salem schools looked up at the instructor, holding his violin at the back of stage.

"OK, who knows what a power chord is?" said the teacher-for-a-day.

The group of Salem students was taught a lesson in heavy-metal string play April 9 from the Oakland, Calif., band Judgement Day. The band is fronted by brothers Anton and Lewis Patzner on violin and cello with drummer Jon Bush.

While the brothers are both classically trained musicians who retain an affinity for Bach, the Judgement Day sound is closer to Mars Volta than Mozart.

West Salem orchestra director Daryl Silberman invited the group after learning they were touring through Oregon. Silberman, a former California resident herself, first met the brothers at a music camp in Berkeley seven years ago.

"They play the music that they love and that they respond to," she said. "For me that's the best kind of role modeling for young musicians. They wouldn't dissuade anyone from following a path of correct study but they help kids understand that music is just music and you can enjoy it as thoroughly as you are able to."

The group played a full set before leading the assembled students in a jam session, showing techniques they've picked up to play metal-style music on classical instruments.

"Our parents were really into getting us lessons and made sure we practiced every day so we got a proficiency on these instruments at a young age," said Anton Patzner, 26. "But as we got older, we became more interested in popular music, rock music mostly. But we were so much better on these instruments than we were on guitar so it just made sense to go do what we wanted to do with what we knew how to do."

The band's style was also born out of necessity while playing for tips on Bay Area street corners.
"We started off playing on the street where the faster and more high-energy the song is, the more tips you make, so that kind of dictated our style originally," Anton Patzner said.
West Salem senior Carsten Kilde, 17, was turned on to the group by Silberman and helped arrange the event. Clad in a Dethklok T-shirt (the band is a fictional creation for Cartoon Network show "Metalocalypse"), Kilde was inspired when he found musicians combining his love of metal and violin.

"I also play guitar and I'm a huge metal fan, but I had never really found any like string, violin or cello, besides Apocalyptica," Kilde said.

"They're amazing," he said after the performance. "I want to be like that."

Freshman Alex Vickery, 14, wasn't a fan before the event but was impressed by what he saw.
"I don't normally listen to heavy metal but they're really good," Vickery said. "(Anton) just makes my head hurt with how fast his bow moves."

For Anton, he feels it's the band's responsibility to show students just how much a violin plugged into a wall of sound can do.

"There's not really anyone else doing this kind of stuff," he said. "For string players, I feel like it's almost a duty of ours to educate and share what we're doing and what we've learned from our experience."

Orchestras play to qualify for state event
Some area schools' choirs, bands also heading to championships

Link: http://www.statesmanjournal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2008804130344

EUNICE KIMStatesman Journal
April 13, 2008

Rachel Gage, 17, sat at the end of a lunch table, practicing violin. As others mingled around her, she quietly played scales and worked on her bow technique.

Gage wanted to make sure she was ready to take the stage with Sprague Symphony Orchestra.
"I've been looking forward to proving that we can be the best we can be," she said. "I'm really excited."

Gage, a junior at Sprague High School, was among the students who participated Saturday in the Salem-Keizer High School Orchestra Invitational Festival at North Salem High School. Seven string and five symphony orchestras from Salem-Keizer and Reynolds high schools performed during the daylong event, which was a qualifier for the state championships May 9 at Oregon State University. The orchestras each played several pieces they had prepared as well as one they had to sight read.

String orchestras from McNary, Sprague, South, West and Reynolds high schools qualified for state, with Sprague scoring the highest and thereby earning an automatic spot at state. The other four groups will submit an application and tape recording to Oregon State Activities Association. A panel of judges will determine which of the groups will go to state.

In the symphony orchestra category, Reynolds placed first, with North, Sprague, South and West also qualifying.

For some students, qualifying for the state championships wasn't the main focus.

"I'm just here to make beautiful music with my friends," said Jonathan Anderson, a senior at South Salem High School who plays violin. "I'd like to make it to state to play more music, but that's not what I care most about."

Garrett Maltzan, a freshman at West Salem High School, said he enjoys competing, especially against his friends at other schools. He played bass with West Salem Symphony Orchestra, which already had qualified for state before Saturday's festival.

"This is a chance to play our songs in front of an audience," Maltzan said.

The festival showcased the strength of the district's music program, said Brandon Correa, an orchestra director at South Salem High.

"It shows how much quality we have here with our community supporting our orchestras," he said. "Every school is producing great musicians and fabulous music."

Bands got a chance to shine Friday at Central Valley League Band Festival at North Salem High School. Eight bands from Salem-Keizer, Redmond and Reynolds high schools competed in the event, which was a qualifier for state.

West Salem's wind ensemble placed first and automatically will go to state May 10 at OSU, said Karl Raschkes, supervisor of music for Salem-Keizer School District. The rest of the bands qualified and could move on to state.

"We are the only league in the state where all of the bands qualified for state this year," Raschkes said. "It's pretty unique."

High school choirs from the area also competed at the district level last week during the District 4 Choral Festival at Willamette University. Seventeen choirs from Salem-Keizer, Dallas, Silverton and Central high schools participated, with Sprague Concert Choir placing first and clinching an automatic spot at state, said Lee Kirkegaard, a music teacher at Leslie Middle School.

Groups from South, McNary, West, North, Dallas and Silverton high schools also qualified and will send tapes to the OSAA to see who goes to the state championships May 3 at George Fox University.

Back at North Salem High School, Natasha Geiling, 17, was feeling pretty good about South Salem Chamber Orchestra's performance Saturday.

"I'm proud of us," said Geiling, who plays violin. "I think we came together well."

Article from the SJ about the SCO

Orchestra announces 2008-09 season lineup

A performance in Albany is also planned for Sept.
RON COWANStatesman Journal

April 6, 2008
Salem Chamber Orchestra will spice its 2008-09 season with international soloists and a local Grammy Award winner. The orchestra also will do its first Albany concert, part of an opening weekend pair of concerts in two cities. Last year, it journeyed to Monmouth. The season will be the 24th for the orchestra and the fifth for music director/conductor Hekun Wu, who continues draw on his musical connections to find soloists.

The season will open with a gala concert-regional outreach concert Sept. 20-21 featuring New York-based musician Xiao-Fen Min, performing on the pipa, a Chinese traditional string instrument. Xiao-Fen Min, also a vocalist, performs traditional Chinese and classic music and jazz. She worked with Björk on the song "I See Who You Are" on Björk's album "Volta."
She will be performing a contemporary piece, Tan Dun's Concerto for String Orchestra and Pipa. Tan Dun did the Grammy-winning score for the film "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon."

Also on the program is Mozart's Symphony No. 35 in D Major, K. 385, and Dvorak's "Czech Suite, D Major, op. 39."

The first concert will be at the Historic Elsinore Theatre in Salem, with the second at the performing arts center at Linn-Benton Community College, Albany.

"It seemed like a good opportunity," executive director James Boyd said.

Albany doesn't have its own orchestra, and it could potentially provide a new audience, he said.

The Masterworks Series will open Nov. 1-2 in Hudson Hall on the Willamette University campus in Salem with flutist Molly Barth, flutist and a new faculty member. She was a member of Eighth Blackbird, whose recording "Strange Imaginary Animals" won a Grammy Award in the Best Chamber Music category. Barth will perform on a program featuring Britten's "Simple Symphony," Vivaldi's Concerto for Piccolo in C Major (with Barth) and Shostakovitch's Chamber Symphony for Strings, op. 110a.

The second program in the Masterworks Series will be Feb. 14-15, 2009, at Hudson Hall and features Shanghai pianist and conductor Xu Zhong, a former colleague of Wu, who is from Shanghai. Xu Zhong is a founding member and artistic director of the China Shanghai International Piano Competition and executive artistic director of Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra. He won the first prize at the 10th International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow.
The all-Mozart program will feature Xu Zhong conducting the overture to "Don Giovanni" and performing and conducting Concerto No. 21 in C Major, K. 467 and Concerto No. 27 in B flat Major.

The third Masterworks program will be April 18-19 at Hudson Hall, featuring Russion cellist Tanya Remenikova. The program features Grieg's "Peer Gynt," Suite. No. 1, op 46; Haydn's Cello Concerto No. 1 in C Major; and Schubert's Symphony No. 8 in B minor ("Unfinished").

The "Gift of Music" Family Concert will move from February to March 15, 2009, to avoid conflicting with school events. The program will feature Poulenc's "Babar the Elephant," will soloists including the Connie Fritz Memorial Concerto Competition winner and the Willamette University Solo and Aria Competition winner.

Most concerts will be at 7:30 p.m. the first day and 3 p.m. the second. The Family Concert will be at 2 and 4 p.m. the same day.

The Connie Fritz competition will be held at 3 p.m. Nov. 23 in Hudson Hall and will be open to music students residing in Marion and Polk counties, up to and including high school.
Hekun Wu conducts all but the February programs.

Season ticket information is available now, with individual tickets on sale in July. Ticket prices will not change, although all seats will be reserved at the Elsinore concert, rather than general admission.

Summer Music Camp Scholarship deadline

The Salem Pops Orchestra is offering a great music scholarship for students attending a summer music camp - the scholarship will be awarded to equal one half the cost of the camp, up to $500. Financial need is not required or considered. The deadline for this scholarship is April 24 - I believe students need to already be enrolled in the camp, so time is of the essence.

For full information, go to:http://www.salempopsorchestra.org/Pops%20Scholarships.pdf http://www.salempopsorchestra.org/Pops%20Music%20Camp%20Scholarship.pdf

Because I am new to the area, I don't have a full list of local music camps, but I am more than willing to search around for appropriate camps for any interested in students. From what I know, there are many fine camps in a 50-75 mile radius and many regional and national camps that might still have availability for interested and qualified students - everything from highly concentrated orchestral experiences to music camps that combine arts and/or theatre with a healthy dose of summer fun. Please take advantage of this generous scholarship possibility - a summer music camp experience is usually a fantastic one and almost always leaves a students more inspired and motivated to become a even better musician.
