Violists...

Attention all violists - Kim Kashkashian, pictured above, is one of the world's most beloved violist. I (Ms. Silberman) met her and saw her play with my former teacher at the San Francisco Conservatory almost 20 years ago. She's a neat lady, a dynamic performer, and very important to the viola world.

This morning there was a 9min story on NPR about some new music she's arranged and recorded. Here's a link:

Enjoy!

Ron Kilde at the Oregon Wine and Food Festival

Hello all,

Happy mid-Holidays to one and all. Here's something of interest to any parents interested in wine and/or fine food: I just noticed that Ron Kilde's trio will be performing at the Oregon Wine and Food Festival at the Fairgrounds on Saturday Jan. 12 - here's a link to the flyer:
(Ron Kilde pictured above is the violinist who came to perform for our orchestra students earlier this month - he is also a grandparent of one of our violinists, Carsten Kilde)

I hope you are all having a relaxing, music-filled holiday break.

Newsletter, pre-concert!!!

1) Concert day schedule and last minute reminders
2) Walker student parents... apologies
3) All City students - there was a mistake in the weekly schedule handed to students
4) Adv. Symphony extended rehearsal Friday Dec. 14
5) Blogspot
6) Congratulations to the ensemble who played before the Oregon Symphony!
7) Booster thank yous

1) Here is the schedule for Wednesday, Dec. 12:
After school there is a MANDATORY meeting from 2:30 - 3:30pm for all orchestra students. This is a 'tech' rehearsal where we will make sure we everyone knows where to sit, when to play, etc... Please clear schedules - private lessons, team practices, work schedules, babysitting and the like - if all students are in attendance it will assure that the concert order will go smoothly. All students are to be to the orchestra room by 6:30pm, DRESSED, and ready
to go.

Advanced Symphony will take photographs in the auditorium at 6:40pm The concert begins at 7pm - it should be over by 8:15pm, if not before. Period 5 students will take a photo, quickly, just after the concert is over. Periods 6, 7, 1 and 2 will take their photos in that order, after Period 5 is done. All students must remain in concert dress until their class photo has been taken, then they are dismissed.

Any questions? Please contact Ms. Silberman -
silberman_daryl@salkeiz.k12.or.us

2) The Walker middle school orchestra concert is on the same night, at the same time as our concert. This was an unavoidable situation that we will try very hard to avoid in the future. Any families that have to 'be at both concerts' are welcome to ask Ms. Silberman for a copy of the video of our concert.

3) Students who will be auditioning for All City will be working on their parts over the next week. Students will work on the material in class on the days after the concert. Ms. Silberman is available on Thursday Dec. 13 after school to work individually with students.

On the yellow sheet handed to students, Ms. Silberman said that Friday December 14 is an after school rehearsal for All City - she forgot about our extended Symphony rehearsal. The All City rehearsal has been moved to Tuesday, Dec. 18 - 2:30 - 3:30, after school.

4) In exchange for no Advanced Symphony rehearsal Tuesday Dec. 18 (there is a short All City rehearsal at that time now) we will have an extended read-through rehearsal on Friday Dec. 14 - the rehearsal will let out at 5pm. We will provide a little snack for the students.

5) Don't forget to check the Blog Spot. Ms. Silberman has recently posted some good information and interesting links that do not appear in this newsletter:

http://www.titanorchestras.blogspot.com/

6) A group of 7 students and Ms. Silberman performed on the mezzanine of the Arlene Schnitzer concert hall in Portland last Sunday before the Oregon Symphony concert. There were many audience members who came to hear us and the students did very well. Our orchestras will have more opportunities to perform in Portland next year. Please see the blog for some pictures of the event.

7) Thanks for parent help with several recent projects: Linda Beardsley with entertainment books, and Donna and Randy Steig and Sue and John Love with wreath and poinsettias. We also appreciated generous Titan Auction donations from Ann McCloud (Red Door Salon &Spa), Stephanie Johnson (Candied Walnut Patisserie) and Trent Young, D.D.S.

See you Wednesday!!!

St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and Schubert's Unfinished

Advanced Symphony is going to read Schubert's 8th symphony, the Unfinished. It's so named because it consists of only 2 movements. Though it was written 6 years before Schubert died, he never completed the symphony. The St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, one of the country's premiere ensemble groups, has a recording out including the symphony. To listen to a feature audio about the recording which has some interesting info about the symphony and the group, link to:

http://minnesota.publicradio.org/display/web/2006/10/24/classical_tracks/

And click on "Listen to feature audio"

Quickie...

Hello Titan Orchestra Parents and Students!

There are some neat concert-going opportunities coming up... one of them is today! Remember, all students must turn in 2 concert reviews by semester end.

1) Oregon Symphony in Salem - this Tuesday, November 20 at 8pm - navigate to www.oregonsymphony.org or www.artsmartsalem.org for more information, including student discount pricing. The concert is Haydn and Beethoven - of particular interest to cellists!!

To see the story, click here (cut and paste - or go to Statesman Journal's website and search for "Oregon Symphony":
Link: _http:/
/www.statesmanjournal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2007711160301_ (http://www.statesmanjournal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2007711160301)

2) Pacific University Music Department (in Forest Grove, OR) presents A Joint Concert with Chamber Ensembles & The Pacific University Orchestra - at 7:30pm Friday, November 30, 2007. Dr. Seliger, conductor of the orchestras, will be coming to Salem in early December to guest conduct a rehearsal of our Advanced Symphony. He has given us 10 free tickets for the concert (normally $5/7 ticket prices). Please email or see Ms. Silberman if you are interested in
tickets. This would be of particular interest for any Juniors or Seniors who might be interested in Pacific University.

3) Poinsettias and wreaths will be ready for pick-up next Friday night and Saturday morning. Please make plans for picking up and don't wait to be called. Thanks!

This is a great time of year to see a Nutcracker Ballet or other holiday inspired show. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!

Newsletter 11/15/07

Orchestra News - Nov. 15, 2007

1) Concert on the blog is good for reviews!
2) Our winter concert date reminder
3) Gift giving helpful suggestions coming soon
4) Music online or at Weathers
5) High School Student Concerto Competition finals this weekend
6) Diane Cline's website

1) On the blog (www.titanorchestras.blogspot.com) Ms. Silberman put a link to the London Philharmonic Orchestra - you can watch a whole concert right there, at your leisure. Period 5 violinist Krysti Beach took it upon herself to review the concert... and Ms. Silberman accepted
that as one of her reviews. (Good idea Krysti!!!)

2) Reminder - our winter holiday-themed concert is WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 12, 7pm.

3) Holiday time is gift giving time and Ms. Silberman has requested information from local music stores regarding their pricing for everything from musical stocking stuffers to big items like cases, bows, and instruments. As soon as information is received, Ms. Silberman will send
it out to this list.

4) To purchase downloadable/printable holiday music, you can search online music merchants like www.virtualsheetmusic.com - a good idea is to google search "christmas music download violin" or "holiday music download string quartet", etc. to find merchants who sell music that you can print out on your own printer. If the merchant requests that you download a program called "Sibelius Scorch" do so - it's a great add on that allows you to see and hear music before you download it. Also, Ms. Silberman can report that Weathers has a nice selection of holiday music for sale - but most of it's relatively easy to play... but, then again, a carol is a carol... the player can do all sorts of things to the tune to make it more interesting. Try even search for free
music... there's a lot out there!

5) This Sunday at 3pm is the Salem Chamber Orchestra Concerto Competition finals (good idea for a review!) featuring local high school artists. Check out www.artsmartsalem.org (the folks who put together that neat arts calendar) for more info.

6) Ms. Cline, strings teacher at Harritt and Chapman Hill, has a great website resource for her students - you might want to check in every now and then:

Corelli factoid

Christmas Concerto (Corelli)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Concerto grosso in G minor, op.6 no. 8, by Arcangelo Corelli, known commonly as his Christmas Concerto, was commissioned by cardinal Pietro Ottoboni and published posthumously in 1714 as part of his Twelve concerti grossi, op.6. The concerto bears the inscription Fatto per la notte di Natale or "made for the night of Christmas". It was composed around 1690, since there is a record of Corelli having that year performed a Christmas concerto for the enjoyment of his then-new patron. The concerto is scored for an ensemble consisting of two concertino violins and cello, ripieno strings and continuo. The work is structured as a concerto da chiesa, in this case expanded from a typical four movement structure to five or six.

Movements:
Vivace-Grave. Arcate, sostenuto e come stà
Allegro
Adagio-Allegro-Adagio
Vivace
Allegro
Largo. Pastorale ad libitum

Each relatively short movement provides multiple tempi and a range of major and minor suspensions. The concerto is generally no longer than fifteen minutes, ending with Corelli's famous Pastorale ad libitum, a peaceful 12/8 finale in the Christmas pastorale form.
The third movement of this piece appeared on the soundtrack of the film Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World

2) Instrument exhibition in Portland
3) All-City

5) All-State
6) Practice logs *ARE* due Tuesday/Wednesday

1) This weekend there are 2 really great concert-going opportunities - the Portland Youth Philharmonic has their concert Saturday Nov. 10 and the Salem Pops has their Friday Nov. 9. For ticket prices and moreinformation http://www.salempopsorchestra.org/ and http://www.portlandyouthphil.org/. Remember to show your West Salem student ID at Salem area concerts to receive student pricing.

2) The 9th annual Cremona exhibit, an exhibit of beautifully handcrafted violins, violas and cellos from Cremona, Italy, will be coming to Portland this next weekend. David Kerr Violin Shop(www.kerrviolins.com/event.html) is hosting this incredible exhibit. There is an opening afternoon reception - for more information, please navigate to the website. This is a traveling exhibit - the instruments are available for viewing (playing) and acquisition (they're mostly advanced-professional quality instruments) - that I used to go to annually in Los Angeles. Even if you're not in the market for a many thousand dollar instrument, it's wonderful to visit the shop and see/play these instruments.

3) Salem's All-City orchestra applications are due Tuesday Nov. 13 - the application needs student and parent signature and must be accompanied by a $7 check made out to Salem-Keizer Public Schools. If you don't know whether or not your child has the application materials, please feel free to contact me (silberman_daryl@salkeiz.k12.or.us). This year's All-City conductor is internationally respected music educator professor Louis Bergonzi - and dynamic conductor and fantastically interesting educator.

4) Thank you to all the parents who have come to parent conferences and who attended the Parent Meeting this past Tuesday.

5)Congratulations to the students accepted to the 2008 Oregon All-State Orchestra:Gwen Gates, ViolinRobin Kim, ViolinTaylor Baldwin, BassTyler King, BassHonorable mention goes to Kayla Fedenrecht for a great effort getting her audition materials together. Auditioning for All-State or All-Northwest is a tough process that takes lots of practice time anddetermination. Students accepted to play All-State will play at the Oregon Music Educators Association conference in Eugune next January. It is very exciting to have West Salem High so well represented.

6) Just a quicky reminder that though students have 5 days off, they are still expected to practice some - periods 5,6, and 7 will need to turn in completed practice logs on the first day back next week, and period 1is learning a wonderful piece of music with solo parts - auditions will be held in 2 weeks to see who will perform the solos at the Dec. 12 concert.

Electrics!

Students have been given the opportunity to 'jam' on Ms. Silberman's electric 4 and 5-stringed violins with electric guitar sound effects processors. Cellists had the opportunity to play an amplified bass (the best we can do until we are able to purchase, beg, or borrow a cello pickup or electric instrument).

Advanced Orch Corelli

In Advanced Orchestra we're playing the Corelli Concerto Grosso Op. 6 No. 8 and I wanted to suggest a really good recording that I found on iTunes: Nicholas McGegan and the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra. You can get a recording of all the Concerti Numbers 7-12 for $5.99. My husband and I know and have played with most members of Philharmonia - they're based in Berkeley, CA (where our kids were born). Their interpretation of this music is great - very light, well articulated, and with good tempos.

Orchestra Newsletter 10/25/07

1) Concert success!
2) Salem Chamber Orchestra concert THIS WEEKEND!
3) Special concert Monday night and Tuesday day time masterclass
4) Parent Meeting Nov. 6
5) Entertainment books - last weekend BIG PUSH!!!
6) Titan Auction November 17th
7) New music info up on the blog

1) Thank you to all students, parents, families and friends for attending the Fall Orchestra concert. Anyone interested in a very non-professional video tape of the concert is welcome to bring a CDR to Ms. Silberman who will burn them a copy. Huge thank you to the parents who helped out before, during, and after the concert - your help is so valuable and appreciated!!

2) Salem Chamber Orchestra is playing Saturday night and Sunday afternoon - a special concert 'side-by-side' with the Salem Youth Symphony strings. Information can be found at www.salemchamberorchestra.org - student tickets are $5, as always. Remember, students need to turn in 2 concert reviews per semester - and very few students, to date, have turned in a review. Students also receive extra credit points for attending SCO and Oregon Symphony concerts.

3) Another great concert-going opportunity: The Grace Goudy Distinguished Artists Series will
present the St. Lawrence String Quartet with clarinetist Todd Palmer on Monday, Nov. 5, at 7:30 p.m. in Hudson Hall at Willamette University. The quartet will present a master class for strings Tuesday, Nov. 6, from 11:30-2:30 p.m. The class is free and will be in Hudson Hall on the Willamette campus.

Any student in my String Ensemble or Symphony Strings class would be easily 'excused' from my class if they were to attend the free master class. Students could review this masterclass for review credit and apply for 'extra credit' upon showing proof of attending the masterclass. The Monday evening concert will be great - the Grosse Fuge is one of my favorite Beethoven string
quartets!!!

The quartet has inspired audiences across the globe with recent tours of North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Their recordings have garnered critical acclaim, drawing Grammy nominations and winning Canada's Juno Award and Germany's Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik.

Tickets for the concert are $20 for adults and $12 for students and seniors, and are available at the Pentacle Theatre Ticket Office in Salem at 145 Liberty Street NE, Suite 102. Tickets can be charged over the phone by calling (503) 485-4300, and are subject to a service charge. For information call the Willamette University Music Department at (503) 370-6255.

6) West Salem High School's annual Titan Auction is Saturday, November 17th. We have two tables reserved for any Orchestra parents/boosters who would like to sit together. New Music Links for Holiday Concert

Hi!

Fantastic concert Tuesday evening! Thank you to all the parents, siblings, relatives, friends, adminstrators, and fellow teachers who supported the Titan Orchestras. The concert was so exciting for me. If anyone is interested in a video of the concert, let me know and I can burn you a copy.

Our next concert will be a winter holiday-themed concert. Here are some links for students to become familiar with new music:

(I suggest getting a copy or buying the mp3 download - but I'll have copies available soon)

ADVANCED SYMPHONY

There will be a few other pieces - including an exciting 8-bass rendition of 3 holiday carols. All students will be 'strolling' carols before the concert.

Enjoy,
~Ms. Silberman

Newsletter 10/18/07

Orchestra News - October 18th
1) Concert attire and call time
2) Parent conferences
3) Great concerts from SCO at the end of October
4) Titan Auction
5) Entertainment books and wreath/poinsettia sales
6) Orchestra Boosters meeting Tuesday, Nov. 6
7) Full Advanced Symphony to continue at 4:30 p.m.

1) Concert Tuesday October 23 is at 7pm - call time for all students (dressed with instruments tuned and ready to go) is 5:45pm. A few students seem to be unclear about the 'black socks or tights' policy - all young ladies are to wear opaque tights or socks and closed toed shoes with a heel strap or solid backed heel - all young men are to wear tux, cummerbund, tie, tux shirt, black socks and concert dress shoes - not sneakers!! Mr. Formal currently has a fantastic sale for students needing tux and shoe items. All students must have proper concert attire or they will not be allowed to play on concert night - please email Ms. Silberman directly (silberman_daryl@salkeiz.k12.or.us) if there are *any* questions regarding attire. We look forward to seeing you at the concert!

2) Parent conferences for West Salem High School are Nov. 7 and 8 - if there are any concerns or questions that you know you'd like Ms. Silberman to address at your meeting time, feel free to touch base with her via email or phone before the meeting. Please use this conference time to discuss any issues regarding practice time, private lessons, and instruments or materials. If you are unable to meet with Ms. Silberman during the schedule conference times but you wish to meet with her, please contact her directly to make arrangements.

3) Saturday, October 27th at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, October 28th at 3:00 p.m. in Hudson Hall at Willamette the Salem Chamber Orchestra is performing "side-by-side" with the Salem Youth Symphony string sections - this is a fantastic concert-going opportunity for both students and parents. Come support members of the Salem Keizer School District Music Faculty and West Salem Titan Orchestra members by attending one of the concerts. Student tickets are $5.00 at the door. Check the SCO website: www.salemchamberorchestra.org.

4) West Salem High School's annual Titan Auction is Saturday, November 17th. We have two tables reserved for any Orchestra parents/boosters who would like to sit together. A whole table qualifies us for 100% instead of 50% of the selling price of an Orchestra-donated auction item. If you would like to be at one of these tables, please do not buy your own tickets. You'll pay for tickets being held. Tickets are $30 each, regardless of where you sit, and are otherwise available from Susan Tolley (lstolley7@msn.com), at Today's Hair, or at the front desk at school. Do you have an appealing item or service to donate? Contact Jenny Gates at gatesjenny@aol.com or reply to this e-mail. The deadline for big-ticket oral auction items is November 2nd. The deadline for silent auction items is November 14th. Donation forms, more details, etc. are available - please ask. The theme for the evening is "007" and decorations will be casino-oriented.

5) Entertainment book sales are going well! Ms. Silberman will celebrate sales by inviting all students who sell at least one book to a special lunch treat - and the student who sells the most in each class will get a trip to the 'treasure chest'. Wreath and poinsettia sales are ongoing. The deadline for poinsettia orders/money is October 29th. The deadline for wreath orders/money is November 8th. Pick-up for all items is November 30th/December 1st. The profit to student accounts can't be figured until the sale is complete, but in years' past has been about $6-7.00 per poinsettia and about $9.00 per wreath.

6) Calling All Parents, Calling All Parents - please come to an open meeting of the Orchestra Booster club at 6:30pm (after Symphony rehearsal) on Tuesday evening Nov. 6. in the Orchestra room. Items on the agenda include retreat information for early spring, financial expenditures, and holiday concert reception possibilities. Please send any other agenda suggestions to Jenny Gates at gatesjenny@aol.com

7) Dr. Nail and Ms. Silberman are entertaining the possibility of continuing with Tuesday evening 4:30 - 6:30pm rehearsals once the full symphony comes together in November (after Marching Band is finished). If this is a huge inconvenience for any string members, please contact Ms. Silberman. An official announcement about the time will be made in the next week.

DID YOU KNOW video?

Hi,

At our West Salem High School all-teacher in-service we were presented with a very popular video going around the internet called, "Did You Know?". It's really impressive... please take the time to watch:

Newsletter Oct 11

Orchestra News - October 11th

1) Entertainment AND Wreath/Poinsettia sales
2) Student accounts
3) Grades
4) Oregon Symphony in Salem Tuesday Oct. 16
5) Orchestra concert Oct. 23 - attire reminder and CALL TIME
6) Metronomes, tuners, stands... oh my
7) Titan Auction - Saturday, November 19th

1) Entertainment book sales are going well - thank you to the Boosters and Linda Beardsley for helping with the sales. All unsold books and payments are due by October 30th. You are responsible for the books you check out. Students will earn $8 - 10 for each $20 book they sell, and often the books sell themselves! Amanda McCloud, in Per 5, turned in the first concert review, so Ms. Silberman bought an Entertainment book from her. The first person to turn in the next review will get a poinsettia purchase from Ms. Silberman. The Wreaths and Poinsettia sale has begun for students who chose to sell. Students received a very informative packet complete with a good instruction sheet. Wreath/poinsettia order forms and payments should be turned together just once, and checks won't be deposited until after the order deadline. (Customers may want to know their checks won't be cashed until early-mid November.)

2) When students sell books, wreaths/poinsettias, or work concession booths at games, the money earned goes into their individual student accounts. These accounts are active until graduation. We *WILL* go on a retreat this year in the spring which will cost something. Additionally, if students are accepted to All-State Orchestra, they can petition to use student account money to pay that fee. Next year, '08/09, some or all of the students may go on a 'big' trip - and again, they may use student account money.

3) Grades will be turned in to the administration no later than Monday Oct. 15. Since we've had no performance yet, the bulk of the grades this period will be determined by the few assignments we've had (Music Day or assignment/excuse, practice logs, playing tests, signature page turn in), Ms. Silberman's assessment of whether the student is working to improve their musicianship and skill, attitude and citizenship in class, and attendance (or excuse from) required sectionals.

4) Next week, on Tuesday, we have an opportunity to see the Oregon Symphony here in Salem (at Willamette University). This would be a *GREAT* concert to review. Students who show student ID get in for $5. Hope to see you there.

5) Did you know we have an orchestra concert on Tuesday, October 23 at 7pm?CALL TIME FOR STUDENTS FOR THE CONCERT IS 5:45pm sharp!!!!! If you have a legitimate (very legitimate!) excuse for being late, MAKE SURE THAT MS. SILBERMAN KNOWS so that you don't get dinged points.Students are to come completely dressed. If students have ANY QUESTIONS about what they need to wear, please direct those questions to Ms. Silberman or ask someone who's been here before. Students will not be allowed to perform if they do not have the correct attire. Flyers for the concert are available to students beginning next week.

6) If anyone still needs to purchase a metronome (well, students can use the online one), tuner, strings, bow, or stand, please touch base with Ms. Silberman. She's willing to purchase (through online merchants or Weathers) whatever you need... then you can reimburse her.

7) West Salem High School's annual Titan Auction is Saturday, November 17th. Orchestra news - 10/4/07

1) Register to have automatic blog alerts
2) Our first concert is Oct. 23
3) Student concert attire and attendance expectation
4) Practice logs
5) Concert review policy
6) Outreach
7) Upcoming local concerts
8) Entertainment books and wreath/poinsettia sale

1) On our blog, at the bottom, there's an option to sign up for post alerts. This way we don't have to send you an email from this address every time we post something at the website. http://www.titanorchestras.blogspot.com/ (just a reminder)

2) We will have flyers available soon for our Oct. 23 concert. Please think of inviting neighbors and friends who have younger children - being an audience member at a concert is something that actually takes some practice and training. A high school concert (especially one of ours with this great selection of music) is a great training ground to learn when you clap, when you don't, how to sit still, etc... The concert will feature works by Mouret, Bach, Holst, and contemporary composers Thom Sharp and Michael Maclean - and more. The concert will hopefully not run longer than an hour - so, bedtimes can be observed.

3) Please consult your green handbook (if you've lost yours or don't have a copy, I can send you a pdf if you'd like) for concert attire guidelines. Men (students) need to purchase a tuxedo shirt, black bowtie and cummerbund to go with their tux (and black socks and black dress shoes). Women need to wear opaque tights or hose and a closed toe dress shoe with a closed heel or heel strap (nothing like seeing a violinist trip as she enters stage...). No long dangling earrings or other ostentatious jewelry.

All students are expected to attend the concert. Their attendance, attitude, discipline, and preparedness will all count heavily in the grading process. Call time will be announced next week (I'm still figuring out what we will be needing) - additionally, any extra rehearsals that may be needed will be announce by an extra email or in this newsletter next week. Of course, if there are extenuating circumstances that come up, please stay in touch with me (Ms. Silberman).

4) All orchestra members (except Advanced Orchestra) are expected to keep a practice log. I do not expect parents to check these logs - students are required to keep them updated and turn them into me each Monday. All students at this point have either classroom music or additional 'practice' music packets that they can be working on. I can give students some individual
attention when requested.

5) This week, all students were given information about how to write a concert review, complete with a sample review that I wrote after attending last week's SCO concert. Over the course of the year students are to review 4 concerts - 2 per semester. Not all of these concerts need to be live symphony concerts. At least one may be a CD review, one may be a DVD review, and one may be of one of our or another school's concert - this is in an effort to make the concert reviews both relevant not too much of a time burden for students. (Of course, if students can attend live concerts with stringed instruments, it's the most relevant and inspiration situation for them).

6) I had an opportunity to visit Walker Middle School this week. This is part of what will be a year-long campaign to more closely align the West schools' orchestra programs. Eventually, students here at West will have an opportunity to mentor a student at one of the 5 schools that
feeds into West. It's my dream that all students are involved in this program. The mentor program will probably launch in the next month or two.

7) Here are some upcoming concerts that might be good to review:
This Friday, Oct. 5 - 7pm - Showcasing Salem Stars (including a string quartet backing a guitar) - Elsinore
Saturday, Oct. 6 - 7:30pm Leo Kottke - Elsinore (this is NOT a string concert, but Leo Kottke is an incredible musician and would be well worth a listen - I will accept a review of this concert)
Sunday, Oct. 14 - 3pm - Camerata Musica
Tuesday, Oct. 16 - 8pm - Oregon Symphony in Salem
Saturday, Oct. 27 - 7:30pm - Salem Chamber Orchestra (in partnership with Salem Youth Symphony)

8) For every $20 entertainment book sold, a student's individual account will be credited at least $8. Books can be checked out in class - see your class president. Checks should be written to WSHS Music Boosters. Checks, cash and/or unsold books are due back at the end of October. You are responsible for the books you check out. ALSO, you might want to be thinking about the wreath/poinsettia sale which will start mid-to-late October. If you had people you sold to last year, dust off the list and plan to talk with them again this year. This money also goes to your individual account and can be used until graduation. More information to come.

Happy Practicing (students)!
:) ~Ms. Silberman

Marley quote at the end??? Please make sure that you're dutifully informed so
that our program runs as smoothly as possible.

3) If anyone has an old (first?) violin in the family that your student
isn't using, we have need to provide a few students with violins - even if it's
just a loan for a short while. Our classroom is short on violins
due to a repair and rehair issue (which will be hopefully resolved by
November). Please contact Ms. Silberman if you have an instrument that might be
happier practiced on than left in a closet.

4) Salem Chamber Orchestra is performing this Saturday, Sept. 29.
Ms.Silberman's husband, violist Danny Seidenberg, is in the viola section, as well as
many other Salem-Keizer orchestra teachers. BEETHOVEN'S 5th!!! Really - you

Entertainment Books!!

Entertainment Books are Here!

Orchestra students can earn money for their personal accounts by selling entertainment books to friends and families. Contact neighbors, call Grandma and Grandpa, have Mom and Dad tell people at work that you have entertainment books.

The entertainment books are great this year! They have coupons for groceries, fast food, elegant dining, gas, attractions, paint and household supplies, movies, car rentals and more. I am impressed by how many local and usable coupons are in the book.
For each book you sell, $8 will be credited to your account. If enough books are sold, you may even make more!! In addition, for every 5 books sold, you will be given a free book after the
sale is over. You can either sell this book and keep the $20 or keep and use the coupons yourself. Other prizes are available. For every book you sell you get a chance at playing the "Get in the Groove game" to win over 1,000 prizes. Enter the internet drawing every day for another chance to win.

Here is what you need to know:
1. Books cost $20
2. There are two kinds of books, one with coupons for all of Oregon and another with coupons for Portland. The Portland book also has coupons for many attractions in Oregon.
3. Books will be checked out to Orchestra students during Orchestra class. Students are responsible to return money for these books or return the books.
4. All money and books must be returned to Linda Beardsley by October 30th.
5. Students may check out more books when they bring in the money from the first books sold.
6. If you have questions call or e-mail:
Linda Beardsley at Lindab4858@comcast.net or 503-399-6443.

Books will be available to students beginning Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday of this next week.

YouTube vid of Ms. Silberman...

A student who played with me years ago posted a video to YouTube. It's a concert at Troy High School in Michigan - the piece is Child's Play, written by my husband (Danny Seidenberg) commissed by Troy High School's Orchestra. I'm playing in the violin section on the first stand (wearing pink and black) - about half way through I take a solo with 2 other violinists.

This is a piece we should play with the symphony string section... :)

Enjoy.

Newsletter 9/21/07

Orchestra News - 9/20/07

Topics covered:
1) Blog!!
2) PARENT MEETING MONDAY, 9/24
3) Tuners and metronomes and stands, oh my!
4) All-State applications are due in a few weeks
5) Entertainment book sales
6) Websites
7) Music Day thanks

1) We have a blog now! Please bookmark:
www.titanorchestras.blogspot.com
This blog will have updated information for parents and students.
Additionally, a copy of each week's newsletter will be posted.

2) CALLING ALL PARENTS!! Please come this Monday night at 7 to the
auditorium for the All-Orchestra Parent Meeting. We should hopefully be
done within an hour.

3) One of the requirements Ms. Silberman outlined in the handbook
(which you all should have read by now, hopefully) is that each student
should have a tuner and a metronome. There is an online metronome -
www.metronomeonline.com - and there is good shareware out there that
will allow you to download a good metronome to your computer. But, the
student will need good enough speakers on the computer and/or a heavy
practice mute ($3 at Weathers) to soften the sound output of the
instrument. Tuners are a little more expensive, but are so very helpful.
If buying a tuner proves to be a difficulty or a financial hardship -
please contact Ms. Silberman.

Also, each student should have a music stand to play off of at home - THIS WAS NOT MENTIONED IN THE HANDBOOK. Any questions? Please voice them at the parent meeting and/or contact Ms. Silberman

4) The All-state Orchestra application and audition tape is due Oct. 8
- Ms. Silberman will give copies of the materials to any interested
students.

5) Entertainment books will be available very soon. Money raised goes to
individual accounts.

6) In the handbook, Ms. Silberman added a back page with many
interesting websites - contemporary players, good online merchants, and
more. Please take some time to navigate to some of these websites.

7) From Marianne Stipe, Music Day coordinator:

A huge THANK YOU to all of you that helped make Music Day a success. We
could not have raised approximately $20,000 (we don’t have a final figure yet as
checks are still coming in) without the help of our many drivers and other
volunteers. I am extremely grateful to all of you that gave up your Saturday
and to those who gave countless hours beforehand and afterwards. Our students
are very fortunate to have such supportive parents. Our Music program
benefits from all of us who are involved and I know we are appreciated by both the
students and their teachers.

Thanks for reading to the end. See you on Monday, Sept. 24!!

Welcome to our blog!!!

Hi all,

Welcome to the West Salem High School Titan Orchestras blog!! This blogspot will be tied to our new website, currently under construction (www.titanorchestras.com). The website will have information, pictures, audio files, and other more 'static' information. The blog is where you can go to find the most up-to-date information, including assignments on occassion (though if this proves to be a good place for me to post assignments, I will do so).

Each week, the content of the email that was sent to the WSHSOrchestra email list will be posted here, in case you need to refer to the info contained within. Additonally, if there is additional new information or fun news that needs to be shared, we will post it here. Please feel free to comment - both I and Mrs. Gates will check frequently.

Thanks!

(To accommodate the schedule of the Salem Youth Symphony participants, our Titan Advanced Symphony Orchestra Tuesday evening rehearsals have been changed to 4:30 - 6:30 p.m. until November. At that point, Symphony will move back to 5:00 - 7:00 p.m.)
Here is the Symphony enrollment policy:All Advanced Orchestra (per 01, 02) students will be required to play in Symphony.

All Symphony Strings (per 07) and Orchestra (per 06) students are strongly encouraged to join Symphony. We want a strong group again this year.
Students in String Ensemble (per 05) need to audition with Ms. Silberman in order to enroll in Symphony.

A note re. schedule conflicts: Students who are also in Marching Band or sports should enroll in period 10 Symphony, but they need to provide Ms. Silberman with a very accurate calendar of when they will and will not attend Symphony rehearsals.
