We are so lucky - the Regency Faculty String Quartet from Pacific Lutheran University will be on tour this next Tuesday. We met the violin instructor, Professor Svenn Ronning, a few years ago and he was dynamic!

1) Salem Chamber Orchestra dress rehearsal Saturday!
The Salem Chamber Orchestra, the mid-valley's own professional orchestra, plays this weekend. The concert is on Sunday at 3pm at Hudson Hall at Willamette University. But, on Saturday Sept. 22 there is a dress rehearsal from 10am - 12:30pm. Students can attend for free with a voucher (will be sent home - email Ms. S if you need another) and adults are only $5. If students stay for at least an hour, they can use this for their '1 per semester' concert review. The repertoire is Beethoven's 5th symphony, Bach's 1st Brandenburg Concerto, and a Mozart Horn Concerto. I (Ms S) play in group, and so do many of our coaches and teacher-friends: Dan Rouslin, Danny Seidenberg, Whitney Moulton, Julie Rundquist, Maria Zvlateva, and more. Hope you can make it!

2) Concert and Carwash at Les Schwab Sunday
Calling all Cars - This Sunday, students attending the Big Trip will be putting on a "Concert and Carwash" from noon to 4pm on Sunday at Les Schwab (off Wallace Rd) in West Salem. Come get your car washed and hear some chamber music... thanks for your patronage!

3) Did you register to win a CodaBow yet?
I sent home an email yesterday with information on how parents (or anyone over 18) can register to win a free CodaBow for home and it comes with a companion bow for school too. Imagine if we had 85 entries - maybe we'd win!!!! Parents - please follow this link to register to win: http://www.codabow.com/giveaway/giveaway_registration.html

4)  Introducing, your coaches...
We are so fortunate to have professional musicians come work with students on a weekly basis in our program. These coaches work with students to help build technical and musical skills. They are paid by the boosters group - thanks to proceeds from Music Day, Titan Auction, and fundraisers. Here is a list of our coaches:
Sigrun Oprea - working with Titan Orchestra violins. Sigrun hails from South Africa and is a violinist who teaches privately in West Salem
Dan "DR" Rouslin - working with Sinfonietta and Chamber violins. Dan is the professor of violin at Willamette University. He also serves as concertmaster of the Salem Chamber Orchestra.
Danny Seidenberg - working with all violas (and eventually violins too). Danny played professional in NY, the Bay Area and Los Angeles for years and now teaches at Keizer Academy of Music, Willamette University, and privately in South Salem. Danny plays in many orchestras and groups, including Salem Chamber Orchestra.
Noah Seitz - working with all cellos. Noah is co-owner of Keizer Academy of Music, teaching private cello and guitar students, and performs locally with many groups, including the Portland Cello Project.
Whitney Moulton - working with all bassist (and violinists switching to bass). Whitney teaches privately in Eugene and Salem and plays all over (jazz and classical) including with Salem Chamber Orchestra.

I feel so fortunate to have these amazing coaches come work with West students!

5)  Last week for Entertainment books
This next week is the last week to sell Entertainment Books - $30 per book ... $10 of which goes directly into student accounts. Please see Ms. S if you need more books!

6) Chamber Orchestra - 'staycation' is Sept. 28
This Next Friday, the 28th of September, is the sleepover night for Chamber Orchestra. Rather than have an expensive retreat, we've opted for a "Staycation" - students will sleep overnight in the orchestra and choir rooms at West. Cost will be minimal to students - just for food expense. Here's what we have planned:
Friday - rehearsal after school, attend the football game.
Saturday - perform at Saturday Market, lunch at Bush Park, 4 hour rehearsal, Perform for parents, Parents provide a potluck dinner, Parents are invited to watch West Side Story with students Saturday evening. No sleepover this evening at West - students may be making arrangements to sleepover at eachother's house this evening though. This staycation retreat will help advance the group musically and help to bond the group socially. The reason for the local venue is to reduce cost due to the fact that most Chamber students will be going on the Big Trip and we wanted to keep expenses to a minimum this year.

Titan Orchestra newsletter #1 (9.7.12)

This newsletter is in a trial format. We'll tweak it a bit over the next few weeks. Thanks for your patience!
Contained within...
1) Music Day is tomorrow - Saturday the 8th
2) Annual Mandatory Parent Meeting is Wednesday the 12th
3) Juniors and Seniors - College night is the 12th too
4) What's due when?
5) Chamber's doing a great job recruiting 4th graders!
6) Check out this video... (The Piano Guys Pachelbel)

1) Music Day is tomorrow - Saturday the 8th - 8am - 4pm (maybe a touch earlier)
Music day is our biggest fundraiser other than Titan Auction (in November). Thank you to students and driving parents for volunteering time! The whole A wing - band, choir and orchestra - spread out around West Salem and go door-to-door asking for donations of money or bottles/cans.

Student info:
Students have already signed up - all 10th-12th grade students and freshmen in Sinfonietta and Chamber.
Students need to arrive at 8am to check-in. Please wear your Titan Orchestra shirt. If you don't have one, you will be provided with one. Wear formal black on the bottom. Make sure shoes you wear are good for walking in - black is preferred. We want to look as formal as possible.

Driver info:
Please arrive at 8am to pick up your route information. If you haven't turned in your insurance forms, please bring them with you tomorrow! Thank you for your time!!

2) Annual Mandatory Parent Meeting is Wednesday the 12th
Calling all parents - students too - for the annual Titan Orchestra program kick off meeting. There will be a sign in sheet for all students - either a parent or a student must be represented. If you are unable to attend, you will be sent an email with information to check out - and beware, if you're not in attendance, you might be volunteered to help on a committee (wouldn't it be better to come to the meeting to choose what you'd like to do??). The Titan Orchestra program does not exist without parent volunteer help. We are looking for everything from committee chairpeople to parents willing to help monitor doors at performances. Every little bit helps!

3) Juniors and Seniors - College night is the 12th too
After the Parent meeting, at roughly 7:45pm, we'll have a college information night. This year the meeting is open to the district music students - so we might have band and choir students and/or orchestra from other high schools. Robert Ponto, director of bands at University of Oregon, will be on hand to answer general and specific questions about music in college. Students and parents have picked up a lot of information at this meeting in years past. Please stay if you have questions about music in college!

4) What's due when?
Here's a quick list of upcoming deadlines and dues:
*Students not attending music day have an assignment due on Monday Sept. 10
*Syllabus signature sheet is due on Monday Sept. 10
*Fair Use Fee is due by September 28 ($40 for non-symphony or Big Trip students, $90 for Symphony and Big Trip students)
*Pencils and Kleenex is due this next week!
*Binders and composition books are due at school
*Have music books at home for home practice...

5) Chamber's doing a great job recruiting 4th graders!
For the first time in West Salem, the Chamber Orchestra is collaborating with Mr. Shippy and Mr. Balch to help recruit new 4th and 5th graders to play strings. We will visit all 5 elementary schools by next Tuesday. Then the 4th/5th grade string orientation evening will be held at West in the auditorium next Thursday where Chamber will play for the new string parents. Thanks to the students for their hard work - they've put together a great 25 minute presentation!

6) Check out this video... (The Piano Guys Pachelbel)
The Piano Guys are at it again! Here's their summer release...
