2) Visit/work our Haunted House!
Students in orchestra are scaring the living snot out of visitors to the new interactive Haunted House - Salem's House of Horrors. Open at 6:30pm every night through Halloween! To visit ($5 tickets) come to 4248 Riverdale Road South in South Salem. Students on the Big Trip can work the Haunted House - contact Tori Winkler at toriwinkler@gmail.com. This is a fundraiser for students on the Big Trip - and it's a cool scary Halloween Haunted House - please come visit!

3) Waltz Night - January 18 - Grand Theater Ballroom
Waltz Night is back! Please put January 18, 2013 on your calendar. Waltz Night will still be a fundraiser for students going on the Big Trip, but will now include downtown Salem businesses because it will be held at the Grand Theater Ballroom. Parents of students going on the Big Trip will be asked to help run the event. Students will be doing decorating, and learning their Waltz music. Thank you to parent Angela Jones for spearheading this neat event!

4) Photo day for Chamber, Symphony, and Big Trip Tuesday
Tuesday our photographer, Evan Roth from www.rothcouple.com photography - will be coming to take formal pictures of Chamber Orchestra, Symphony, and the Big Trip orchestra. Students will know on Friday or Monday what they'll need to wear. Big Trip students not in Symphony, please come immediately after school on Tuesday so we can take the picture before you run off to your various other events. Thanks!

5) Rhythm packets have been handed out
This year, we have a new system whereby students will be turning in Rhythm/theory worksheets every few weeks. All students in the program have now been issued these packets. Students - please keep the due dates in your planners. I'll also have the assignment pages and due dates listed on the board in the orchestra room. If you misplace or loose your packet, please bring me $5 and I'll issue you a new one.

6) Check out this video... (cello music)
This Saturday, some students in Chamber are playing up in Portland at the Arlene Schnitzer concert hall on the mezzanine before the OR Symphony concert. We'll be seeing cellist Alban Gerhardt performing Tchaikovsky's Rococo variations. He will be playing on Sunday night in Salem ($5 student tix available at the door). Here's a video of Alban playing a bit of Bach...

Pickup at West will be on November 16 - just in time for Thanksgiving Day. Students will receive $2.50 - 4 for each item sold. Thank you to Melissa Canfield for organizing this popular fundraiser!

3) Many local concerts coming up - review potential!
There are many local performing groups offering concerts these next few weeks. I strongly encourage families to attend local concerts! Students who attend at least the first half of a concert may submit a review of that concert. Here's a short list of concerts coming up - click on the name of the group to be rerouted to their website for more performance and ticket information:
Salem Philharmonia - Oct. 20 and Nov. 17
Salem Pops - Nov. 3
Salem Chamber Orchestra - Nov. 17 (morning free dress rehearsal) and Nov. 18
Oregon Symphony in Salem - Oct. 28

4)  Titan Orchestra 'gear' order form will be available at the concert!

Also any parent interested in purchasing one of our beautiful Titan Music windbreaker jackets for $40 (updated) may order one that evening too.

Titan Orchestra Newsletter #6 (10.10.12)

Contained within...
1) Waltz Night update
2) Trip deposit due THUR 10/11!
3) Added rehearsal for String Orchestra
4) Titan Orchestra 'gear' order form coming soon!
5)
Photo booth will be set up at the concert
6) Easy grades happen this grading period
7) Check out this video... (The BEST Happy bday video EVER!)

1) Waltz Night update
Due to some extenuating circumstances, Waltz Night has been postponed - the new date will be either Jan 18 or 19... please wait for an 'official announcement' in the next week or two. Thanks for your understanding and patience. Students will continue to learn the Waltz music repertoire at rehearsals that were already scheduled, only there will be no rehearsal on Friday Oct. 19 or Saturday Oct. 20.

2) Trip deposit due THURSDAY 10/11!
For those going on the 2013 Big Trip, the 1st payment of $350 is due Thursday Oct. 11. This payment is due for each student and chaperon. If you cannot make the complete payment, pay what you can and email Geoff Winkler. Scholarship students will have an extention until they hear from the scholarship committee as to the results of their request. Please keep up with the payment schedule - you can find that on our website on the Big Trip tab.

3) Added rehearsal for String Orchestra
String Orchestra will have an extra rehearsal this next week - they've all commited to coming after school on Wednesday Oct. 17. We will meet from 2:30 - 3:30. I know that the Cross Country students won't be in attendance, but everyone else needs to do what they can to change appointments and work on getting a ride home. I can help arrange transportation for those who live far from West.

4)  Titan Orchestra 'gear' order form coming soon!
At the concert on October 23, we will have order forms available for parents and students who wish to purchase the following Titan Orchestra (or Titan Music) gear: sweatshirts, sweatpants, yoga pants (NEW!), water bottles, and a special Titan Orchestra necklace. I have ordered a few extra Titan Orchestra tshirts that will be available for purchase. Also any parent interested in purchasing one of our beautiful Titan Music windbreaker jackets for $35 may order one that evening too.

5) Photo booth will be set up at the concert
Our photographers Evan and Melissa Roth will be at the October 23 concert to take pictures of our orchestras. The Roths will have order forms available for you to purchase these group pictures. They will also be available for portrait (solo or group) photos of musicians that evening. More info about that in a separate email or in next week's newsletter.

6) Easy grades happen this grading period
Grading day is this next Monday and most students will happily find an "A" as their grade. At this point, the only reason you might not be enjoying an "A" in orchestra is because you missed a lot of school these past 6 weeks or Chamber Orchestra student didn't turn in the one assignment (recorded scales and etude) that will be due by Monday at 1pm. For the next 4 grading periods, grades get a little more serious - if a student misses a concert with an unexcused absence or doesn't turn in homework (rhythm sheets) the grade can quickly plummet. Please stay in touch with assignment deadlines and remember that attendance at concerts is key to the success of each student!

2) Concert tonight, if you're interested
3) Regency String Quartet visit recap
4) What was all due this week?

1) Wreaths and Poinsettias start today
The annual wreath and poinsettia fundraiser starts today. Students can sell wreaths, garlands, baskets and other lovely holiday inspired decorations and receive a portion of the sale in their student account. All students will have a quick presentation in class today (Friday) and will be offered a packet. The sale goes through the end of October.

2) Concert tonight, if you're interested
My husband (and one of our coaches) Danny Seidenberg and I are playing a concert of baroque violin duets tonight at Sharon Moore's Hayloft in East Salem tonight as a fundraiser for the Salem Chamber Orchestra. There is no official cost to attend, but donations are requested at the end of the concert. Here's the Facebook public invite, for more info: FACEBOOK BAROQUE VIOLIN DUO EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT

3) Regency String Quartet visit recap
This past Tuesday all students had the opportunity to hear the Regency String Quartet from Pacific Lutheran University. This faculty string quartet played a movement from a Debussy and Beethoven string quartet. The professors also talked to students about the college application process. The students wrote thank you notes, using "musician's vocabulary", so we not only got a lovely performance but a literacy assignment at the same time. Any parents or students interested in more info about Pacific Lutheran are welcome to contact Dr. Ronnig directly - I have his contact information for you.

4)  What was all due this week?
The Fair Use fees or a waiver were due this past week - $40 for String Orchestra and Sinfonietta students not going on the Big Trip or in Symphony. $90 for those in Symphony and those going on the Big Trip. Please make checks out to Titan Music Boosters with a note in the memo line saying Fair Use Fee. If you wish to apply a waiver to your fee, please pick one up in the orchestra room or follow this link: http://titanorchestra.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/Fair_Use_Fee_Waiver.pdf. Also the Big Trip waiver is due today!!!

5) Fall Concert dress code
Our first concert is coming up - Tuesday October 23 - and here is the dress code policy: http://titanorchestra.com/?page_id=66 Chamber Orchestra will wear school issued clothes, except men (men wear all black for the first concert). Students in String Orchestra and Sinfonietta wear all black - head to toe. Ladies need shoulders covered. Men need long sleeve shirts. No exposed ankles. No white or grey or stripes or colors anywhere - shoes included. If purchasing mature, performance-appropriate clothing presents a financial impediment for any family, contact Ms. Silberman (I shop frequently at consignment/resale shops and will happily pick up formal clothes for families that request it).

6) Reminder for Big Trip students and parents!!
Wednesday the 11th is our first Big Trip payment deadline. $350 needs to be transferred from student accounts into the Big Trip account. Please email Todd Canfield attitanorchstudentaccount@yahoo.com for an update on your student account. Bring checks to school made out to Titan Music Boosters and have students put 'Big Trip' on the envelope. Scholarship students will be notified by Tuesday of their prorated amount due - factor on owing somewhere between 50-80% of the $350 that is due.

7) Check out this video... (Metal plate engraving for music)
Did you ever think about how music was printed in the days before computers? Metal plate engraving, that's how. Check out this beautiful video that demonstrates this century old process...
