More concerts coming up - Oregon Symphony and Sprague benefit

Symphony to perform on Tuesday

From the Statesman Journal - February 17, 2008

The Oregon Symphony will serve up something for everyone Tuesday (2/19/08) when music director Carlos Kalmar leads the orchestra in a classical series program of short works spanning the 19th and 20th centuries.

The program begins with Aaron Copland's "Fanfare for the Common Man," the composer's tribute to the dignity of the American Everyman. Brazilian-born pianist Arnaldo Cohen joins the orchestra as guest soloist in a performance of Franz Liszt's Piano Concerto No. 2, a single-movement work.

Highlights on the program include:
Samuel Barber's "Souvenirs," a set of six short dances that pay homage to the bygone glory of New York's Plaza Hotel in the opulent era before World War I.
George Bizet's Symphony No. 1 in C major, a work written in 1855, when the composer was 17 years old, but never published and never performed until 60 years after Bizet's death.

This will be the last chance this season to see Kalmar conduct in Salem. Tickets are $25 to $43 at http://www.ticketswest.com/ or by calling (800) 992-8499 or at any Safeway TicketsWest outlet. Student tickets at $5 are available at the ticket office on the night of the performance. The concert is at 8 p.m. at Willamette University's Smith Auditorium, 900 State St., Salem.

Sprague High School, one of Oregon's top-rated high school music programs, is featuring the works of Monteverdi, Mahler, Bartok and Gliere in a benefit concert to raise funds for travel and performance opportunities.
Sprague High School's three orchestras, led by director Scott Esty, a former member of the Oregon Symphony, will play at 7 p.m. Feb. 26 at the Salem Alliance Church at 555 Gaines St. NE, Salem.

Sprague alumnus Peter Frajola, a violinist and associate concertmaster for the Oregon Symphony, will be the guest artist at the concert.

A silent auction featuring donated goods and services will begin at 5:30 p.m.
Tickets are $10 and may be purchased through orchestra members or at the door the night of the performance. For further information, contact Esty at Sprague, (503) 399-3261.
