Titan Orchestra Newsletter #22

CONCERT TONIGHT 6:30pm

Contained within...
1) Concert details - including outfit info
2) Big Trip time! Follow the Blog
3) OR Sym concert Friday night

4) Boot Camp planning...
5) Thank you - and Big Trip 2015 (?!)
7) Check out this video...  (Spiderman the Musical)

1) Concert details- including outfit info
Concert this Wednesday is a little different than in years past. Here is the schedule:
Students come after school at 2:30!
2:30 - En Masse rehearsal (please bring home instruments if you can!!) - all students required to attend.
3:30 Big Trip rehearsal.
4:15pm Big Trip dismissed.
Concert Call Time: 6:15pm
Concert time: 6:30.
Concert conclusion 7:45 (or earlier if it flows well)

The concert outfit for this concert is simple - dress nicely. No jeans. No tennis shoes. No sleeveless shirts. No short skirts (skirts below the knee!). No high heel shoes. Dress like you were going to visit your grandmother. The reason for the change in this concert outfit is that the Big Trip folks need to have black clothes and Titan Orchestra shirts packed in their bag.

2) Big Trip time! Follow the Blog
Big Trip students and Chaperons are off at 4am tomorrow morning. You are welcome to follow the Blog of the trip - hopefully, there'll be an update each evening. Students will perform 3 times, see 4 performances including a Broadway musical (Spiderman!), see the Stradivarius instrument collection in DC, tour Juilliard, and more!

3) OR Sym concert Friday night
For those not on the Big Trip, there's a great concert here in town Friday night - the Oregon Symphony in Salem, at Smith Hall at Willamette University. Concert is at 8pm and $5 student tickets should be available at the door. The concert features the Rachmaninoff Piano Concert #1 and a Dvorak Symphony. For more info on the concert, click here: http://www.orsymphony.org/salem/

4) Boot Camp planning...
Amazingly, it's already time to gently start thinking about next year. Boot Camp is a "mandatory" part of our program. PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDARS NOW! Orchestra Boot Camp occurs 2 weeks before the start of school. There is a fee for Boot Camp - $40 - payable in August, that goes towards snacks and guest artists. This is our opportunity to come together as a program - from entering 9th graders through veteran seniors - to play both for and with each other. Additionally, students will be treated to wonderful guest performers - from all over Oregon!  All students enrolled in orchestra for the 2013-14 school year are required to attend Boot Camp (Students who absolutely cannot attend because of family vacation or sports are of course excused). Chamber Orchestra members will be required to come Monday August 19 for the day 10am - 6pm (evening sleepover is optional). Sinfonietta and String Orchestra members come Tuesday - Friday August 20-23 from 9:30am - 12:30pm, Chamber stays over an additional hour, until 1:30pm. On Friday the 23rd, the camp ends with a final performance at Noon and everyone is dismissed afterwards. Parents are welcome to come to that performance.

5) Thank you - and Big Trip 2015 (?!)
Thank you to all the parents who have fundraised like crazy to get students off to DC and NY. Huge thanks to Geoff Winkler (and wife Carrie, our booster president) for countless hours of work. And just so you know, planning will begin next Fall for the Big Trip 2015 trip. A committee will be put together to research options - domestic and international. Montreal? Boston? Ireland? SF?

6) Check out this video... (Spiderman!)

Those on the Big Trip will be seeing Spiderman The Musical in NY this Saturday. Here's a preview:

Circle of 5ths help

Here's some advice on figuring out the circle of 5ths:

Sharps
The last sharp listed on the staff is the 7th note of the scale - so the key is a half step higher than that sharp.
2 sharps - last sharp listed is C# so the key is D Major
3 sharps - last sharp listed is G# so the key is A Major

Flats
You just have to remember that 1 flat IS F Major
Then, after that, the 2nd to last flat listed on the staff IS the key signature
2 flats - 2nd to last flat is Bb so the key is Bb Major
4 flats - 2nd to last flat is Ab so the key is Ab Major

Relative minors
The 6th note of any Major key starts the relative minor key.
Example - in C Major, A is the 6th note so a minor is the relative to C Major

Another way to work that through, the relative minor key is a minor 3rd down from the Major key (same as going up a 6th).

Here are some websites that can test your key signature knowledge:

2) Symphony competition festival tomorrow
3) Chamber concert Monday

4) Big Trip rehearsal next Friday (day off)
5) Donut orders due!
6) Congrats to Solo and Ensemble kids
7) Apply for a free guitar!!
8) Check out this video... (Red Priest Vivaldi!!!)

1) Don't miss RED PRIEST this weekend!
Salem is so lucky - the European baroque group Red Priest is here in Salem. Here's their website -

http://redpriest.bandzoogle.com/fr_home.cfm
The Italian composer Vivaldi was known as the Red Priest as he was a Jesuit priest with a shock of red hair. This group performs baroque music (from 1600 -1750) on traditional instruments - baroque violin and cello, harpsichord, and wood recorder - with lots of flair and musical theatrics! They are simply amazing to watch and hear. If you want to hear them in recital, go to Willamette's Fine Arts series concert tomorrow (Fri) night at Hudson Hall at Willamette University - click HERE for info. Adults are $23 and students with ID are $8. Saturday morning they are playing with Salem Chamber Orchestra at our dress rehearsal - click HERE for a free student voucher (parents are $5) - the rehearsal is from 10-12:30am. Sunday they play with Salem Chamber at 3pm at Hudson Hall for the concert. Click HERE for Salem Chamber Orchestra info.

2) Symphony competition festival tomorrow
Symphony is off to George Fox University tomorrow, Friday March 8, to compete at their Band festival. We'll get to hear West's Wind Ensemble compete/perform at 12:45 and then we perform at 2:15pm. Students have been given the itinerary. If the festival runs late, we might be back a little later than 4:30pm. This is the first of 2 or 3 festivals we compete at that can qualify us for the OSAA State Full Orchestra championships in May - best of luck, Titans!!

3) Chamber concert Monday - at Capital Manor 6:30pm
Capital Manor, here in West Salem, has invited Chamber Orchestra to perform again! We will be playing our brand new "State Set" and featuring soloists from this past weekend's district Solo and Ensemble. The concert starts at 6:30pm - parents and friends are welcome to attend!

4) Big Trip rehearsal next Friday (day off)
Next Friday, Marcy 15, is a grading day - no school for high school students. But, that's a GREAT opportunity for the Big Trip to finish up rehearsing as a big group. All Big Trip students are requested to attend rehearsal from 1-3pm. Bach, Mozart, Playful Pizzicato, Dreaming, Sweet Georgia Brown, and Orange Jam.

5) Donut orders due!
Big Trip students have a deadline coming up for Krispy Kreme donuts - money and order forms are due Monday (March 12)!

6) Congrats of Solo and Ensemble kids
Thank you to all the students who played solos and ensembles last weekend at our district's Solo and Ensemble festival at McNary. Congrats to Hendrik for placing 2nd in the district and being nominated as an alternate to go to State, if there's room.

7) Apply for a free guitar!!
A group in town called the Valley Future Music Fund is offering application for a free guitar - I'm not sure how many they're giving away, but it's worth it to fill out the application if you're interested - acoustic or electric. All you need to do is fill out the application and write a one page essay about your love of music. Here's the link - good luck! http://www.vfmf.org/ValleyFutureMusiciansFund_Application.pdf

8) Check out this video... (Red Priest Vivaldi!!!!!)

So, this amazing baroque group Red Priest specializes in Vivaldi - check them out...

2) Solo and Ensemble info
3) Krispy Kreme!!!

4) Concert Sunday at the Library
5) Symphony trip next Friday
6) Check out this video... (Keister Family Fiddlers)

1) Big Trip updates - payment, rehearsals...
Big Trip is only a few weeks away. Today is the deadline for payment. Please email Geoff Winkler if you have any issues, questions, or concerns. The email for how much  is in your student account is at the bottom of this newsletter email. We have Big Trip rehearsal today, next Wednesday and Friday the 15th which is a "No School" Grading day. It's getting exciting!!!

2) Solo and Ensemble
Solo and Ensemble is this weekend - Saturday March 2 at McNary High School. The students know what they are performing and what time they're playing. Come about 30 or 45 minutes early to warm up. Dress nicely! Have an original score copy for the judge. Parents and friends are welcome to come in with you to watch your performance... it feels better to have friends in the room rather than just a judge.

3) Krispy Kreme!!!
Big Trip folks are expected to sell 5 dozen Krispy Kreme donuts as our final trip fundraiser. Please get those donuts sold and the order form turned it!

4)Concert Sunday at the Library
I will be playing with my baroque string quartet - Salem Baroque - this Sunday, March 3, at the downtown Salem Public Library at 3pm in the Loucks Auditorium. It's a concert of Haydn and Mozart string quartets - music from the time period of the American Revolution. Tickets are free, but this concert usually sells out, so please plan on arriving up to an hour early to get a seat. You may use this for a live review!

5) Symphony trip next Friday
The full itinerary for the Symphony trip will be handed out on Tuesday. But, here's the basics - Symphony students are excused from periods 4 - 7 next Friday. We'll meet in the orchestra room at the start of 4th period to change into concert dress (full symphony dress). We'll pack up and load the bus. We warm up at George Fox at 1:45 and perform at 2:15, then we sight read and come home. We should be home around 4... or maybe as late as 5.

Assignment extended to Wed

Contained within...
1) Revised deadline for assignment
2) Trip meeting Tuesday 2/19 - Mandatory!
3) SYMPHONY COMPETES AT FOX March 8, afternoon

4) Concerts coming up - good for reviews!
5) Check out this video... (The Piano Guys - Taylor Swift)

1) Revised deadline for assignment
Because I was sick this past week, I will do a lesson next Tuesday in all 3 classes that will help students complete the Theory assignment that would have been due tomorrow. The revised deadline for turning the assignment in is now Tuesday the 20th. The assignment has to do with the Circle of 5ths. Here's a great website that explains the concepts, in case any students are not in class next Tuesday: http://www.studybass.com/lessons/harmony/the-circle-of-fifths-diagram/

2) Trip meeting Tuesday 2/19 - Mandatory!
All students, with at least one parent, and chaperons going on the Big Trip need to be present on Tuesday February 19 at 7pm in the orchestra room. We'll be going over the itinerary, packing tips, travel protocol, discipline contracts, and more. The trip is only 5 weeks away... getting very exciting! (It's almost time to start checking the Weather)

3) SYMPHONY COMPETES AT FOX March 8, afternoon
Very exciting news! Symphony *will* be competing at George Fox after all! This date *had* been on the calendar, then was removed in January because they gave us a 'way too early' time slot. But we just heard that we can have an afternoon timeslot around 2pm. So, Symphony will indeed compete. This is great news! If we qualify for OSAA State this early in the season, it'll give us time to mature and grow for the District competition in April. More details will be coming to Symphony students in the next few weeks. The buses will likely return around 4pm on March 8.

4) Concerts coming up - good for reviews!
Today, Thursday 2/14, Symphony is going to hear the Central Washington University Symphony Orchestra perform at South Salem High School - you may use this concert for a review. Sunday, the Salem Chamber Orchestra has their Family Concert - free concert - at North Salem High School at 3pm. Going to be a fun concert. You may use that concert for review. Next week, All City concert at North Salem High School is on Saturday the 23rd at 7pm. You may use that concert for review. Also on Saturday the 23rd the Salem Philharmonia performs at Chemeketa at 7pm. You may use that concert for review. Just remember that the reviews need to be turned in within 2 weeks of the concert date.

5) Check out this video... (The Piano Guys - Taylor Swift)

The Piano Guys are at it again. This is a lovely Taylor Swift song - in time for Valentine's Day... enjoy:
