Orchestra to fill local homes for summer recitals

During July and August the Salem Chamber Orchestra will present the Chamber Music Festival, "Summer Soirées." This series of chamber music recitals will feature SCO musicians intimately performing chamber music, as well as showings of original watercolors by artist Sam Rouslin.

The schedule is as follows:

-7:30 p.m. July 9: Katherine McLin, violinist, and Andrew Campbell, pianist; Villa Bacca Collina, home of Jack and Pam Scott. The McLin/Campbell Duo appears on recital series throughout the United States. They will play works by Copland, Ives, and de Falla.

-4 p.m. July 26: Chamber Sailors, home of Carole Orloff. Violinist Cathy Heithaus, cellist Jenny Gleason, and pianist Carole Orloff. Heithaus and Gleason are orchestra members and Orloff was executive director 2002-2004.

-7:30 p.m. Aug. 5: SCO Chamber Ensemble — Schubert Octet; home of Richard and Carolyn Harcourt. One of the most popular works in the chamber music repertoire will be performed by Dan Rouslin, Cathy Heithaus, Abigail Stoughton, Jenny Gleason, Whitney Moulton, Nicoleen Willson, Helena Kopchick and Mike Hettwer.

-7:30 p.m. Aug. 19: Salem Baroque; Gaiety Hill House, home of Tom Anderson and Jessica Maxwell. French baroque works performed by violinists Danny Seidenberg and Daryl Silberman, cellist Georgienne Young, and harpsichordist Susan Miller.

-4 p.m. Aug. 23: SCO Brass in the Garden; home of Susan Miller. Musicians Brett Randolph and Scott Gerweck, trumpets, Mike Hettwer, horn, Matthew Hettwer, trombone, and Phil Rundquist, tuba.

-7:30 p.m. Aug. 26: "Beethoven in G" featuring Ian Scarfe, pianist, and Dan Rouslin, violinist; home of Richard and Carolyn Harcourt. A 2005 graduate of Willamette University, guest pianist Scarfe will play a reduced version of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4. The program will also include Beethoven's Violin Sonata No. 10 in G Major featuring SCO concert master Dan Rouslin.

Chamber Orchestra parents and students...

Hi,

Here's an update from the meeting tonight.

* We won't be going on the NOF tour to Santa Clara next February. Instead, we will look into the possibility of going to Sunriver or somewhere else somewhat local for a retreat - either chamber music or State competition music focused

* We will be looking into having Mark Wood (www.woodviolins.com) come to West Salem to do a clinic, possibly a benefit concert, with us in February of next year

* Reserve Saturday the 12th for a possible lock-in, chamber orchestra bonding day - this *IS* the day of Music Day... so, we'll get some work done for both boosters and for chamber orchestra

* If you are interested in helping out with any of the following booster positions, please contact Kelly Culver: kculver@comcast.net
-Waltz Night Coordinator
-Entertainment Book Coordinator (August - October)
-Wreath and Poinsettia Coordinator (October - December)
-Travel committee (we'll be meeting in July to work on the retreat)

All-State audition material...

Hi All-State auditioners. All State materials will be due at the end of September, or beginning of October - and, since we start late this year, there won't be a lot of time to get these recorded at the beginning of the year. You may use school equipment (CD burner and/or MP3 recorder) to get your materials prepared. VIOLIN:

Play a 3-octave A Major scale using sixteenth notes, slurring eight notes to a bowstroke. Metronome marking: quarter note=108.
Play a 3-octave A Melodic Minor scale, using sixteenth notes and a detaché bow stroke. Metronome marking: quarter note=92.
Play the first 25 bars of Mazas Number 23, Opus 36, Book 1, Published by Schirmer. Metronome marking: eighth note=96.
Play a short excerpt from your current solo literature lasting no more than one minute. Announce the title, composer and movement of the selection before playing the excerpt.

Play the first 16 bars of the Rigoletto excerpt, page 122 in Simandl, Book 1, published by Fischer. Metronome marking; quarter note=82.
Play a short excerpt from your current solo literature lasting no more than one minute. Announce the title, composer and movement of the selection before playing the excerpt.

2009-10 Chamber Orchestra meeting Thursday 6/11

There's an important meeting this Thursday evening at 7pm in the orchestra room (or, maybe it will be in the choir room) for all students and parents in next year's Chamber Orchestra (double blocked orchestra - currently called "Advanced).

Congrats Grads!!!

Congratulation to all 15 (actually, it's 17 if we include Kayla Johnson and Tyler King who walked at graduation but left us at semester in January) Titan Orchestra graduating seniors. Thank you for all you've done for me, for the orchestras, and for West. You have touched so many lives and have personally taught me so much. I hope that you always keep music close to your hearts - play as often as you can... and, please keep in touch.

Next year, this blogspot *might* move to the website... so please keep an eye on what we're up to - you will always be a part of this organization. We're hoping to start the tradition of inviting as many alumni as we can to come to the State concert and the final concerto concert. You're presence will inspire us!!

Enjoy walking across that stage tonight... I'm so proud of your musical accomplishments.
