(Paganini time)  1) All City this weekend - good for review! Because this year is such a great orchestra year at All City I will allow a review of our All City on Saturday to count towards Live Review credit (turned in within 2 weeks of the concert). The concert is at 7pm at North Salem High's auditorium. Come early to find parking and get a ticket. Orchestra plays 2nd, after the choir. GOOD LUCK WEST HIGH ALL CITIERS! 2) Salem Philharmonia Salem Philharmonia has a concert Saturday night too - you may review that for Live Review credit too. I believe they have a discounted price for Salem-Keizer students (with ID). Here's more info: http://www.salemphil.org/ 3) Willamette Valley Fruit Company DUE MONDAY!! Willamette Valley Fruit Company orders are due Monday. All students have been given the opportunity to receive a packet. If you want a packet and don't have one, go to our website and check the fundraising page! Frozen fruit in 2lb or 10lb bags, fruit bars, or pie cards are on this round. The pie cards are good for one pie at the WVFC headquarters in East Salem and do not expire! (Can you imagine getting some Christmas shopping done now?!!) 4) Want a Krispy Kreme donut?! We are doing a last gasp Krispy Kreme donut fundraiser for the Big Trip. Students going on the Big Trip are being asked to sell 5 dozen donuts at $10 per dozen. If you work at an office where you might appreciate some yummy donuts, please let a Big Trip student know and I'm sure they'll be happy to sell you a dozen, or two.  5) Chamber has a 6:30am rehearsal Wednesday Chamber is going to do a 6:30am (yawn) rehearsal on thisnext Wednesday morning. Students are required to be there, on time, to rehearse until 1st period. Our first concert of this season is March 11 - we need all the rehearsal time we can pour on. (The Piano Guys - Taylor Swift)  1) Revised deadline for assignment Because I was sick this past week, I will do a lesson next Tuesday in all 3 classes that will help students complete the Theory assignment that would have been due tomorrow. The revised deadline for turning the assignment in is now Tuesday the 20th. The assignment has to do with the Circle of 5ths. Here's a great website that explains the concepts, in case any students are not in class next Tuesday: http://www.studybass.com/lessons/harmony/the-circle-of-fifths-diagram/ 2) Trip meeting Tuesday 2/19 - Mandatory! All students, with at least one parent, and chaperons going on the Big Trip need to be present on Tuesday February 19 at 7pm in the orchestra room. We'll be going over the itinerary, packing tips, travel protocol, discipline contracts, and more. The trip is only 5 weeks away... getting very exciting! (It's almost time to start checking the Weather) 3) SYMPHONY COMPETES AT FOX March 8, afternoon Very exciting news! Symphony *will* be competing at George Fox after all! This date *had* been on the calendar, then was removed in January because they gave us a 'way too early' time slot. But we just heard that we can have an afternoon timeslot around 2pm. So, Symphony will indeed compete. This is great news! If we qualify for OSAA State this early in the season, it'll give us time to mature and grow for the District competition in April. More details will be coming to Symphony students in the next few weeks. The buses will likely return around 4pm on March 8. 4) Concerts coming up - good for reviews! Today, Thursday 2/14, Symphony is going to hear the Central Washington University Symphony Orchestra perform at South Salem High School - you may use this concert for a review. Sunday, the Salem Chamber Orchestra has their Family Concert - free concert - at North Salem High School at 3pm. Going to be a fun concert. You may use that concert for review. Next week, All City concert at North Salem High School is on Saturday the 23rd at 7pm. You may use that concert for review. Also on Saturday the 23rd the Salem Philharmonia performs at Chemeketa at 7pm. You may use that concert for review. More details then. 2) Willamette Valley Fruit Fundraiser coming your way Thanks to our dedicated parents, we'll be rolling out the Willamette Valley Fruit Company fundraiser one last time. It'll be a quick turn around - get your order forms, take orders, and get payment in!!! More info will be given to students in class and will be posted online in the next few days. We've had students raise $200+ into their student accounts with this fundraiser - and remember you don't have to be going on the Big Trip to participate - everyone is welcome to sell. You may use Student Account fees to pay Fair Use fees and Boot Camp fees. 3) Sinfonietta will play Sat. April 13 - mark your calendar Sinfonietta students will be performing at 8:15am on Saturday April 13 for the District Orchestra Festival. This is the first time this group will be playing at the Festival. We will be adjudicated by the judges, so we hope to sound our very best! Please mark your calendars now. 4) Symphony Thursday (2/14) is at South - no instruments Symphony next Thursday will be at South Salem High School. At 4pm I will take attendance and we will be treated to the Central Washington University Symphony Orchestra. The concert will be about 45 minutes long. We'll get to meet the conductor and students after the performance. STUDENTS WILL NEED TO WORK OUT CARPOOLS TO GET TO AND FROM SOUTH! Students will be excused by 5:30pm. THIS CONCERT CAN BE USED FOR A LIVE REVIEW. Students, and parents, not in Symphony are more than welcome to come! CWU will be playing Tchaikovsky's 6th symphony and the famous Candide Overture. Students in All NW are excused. Contained within... 1) Thursday Jan 31 concert - 5:30pm!!! 2) Music Beyond the Chamber 3) Semester 2 - important dates 4) Check out this video... (Pink Martini)  1) Thursday Jan 31 concert - 5:30pm!!! On Thursday we have a very special concert. At 5:30 all students will perform with and then be treated to hearing the musicians from Music Beyond the Chamber. These musicians hail from Florida and California and are on tour in the Pacific Northwest this next week. Thanks to the Culvers and Tatmans, they will be hosted here in West Salem. On Thursday the 31st, all students in class will be coached by our guest musicians, and then they will perform together.  This concert and the daytime residency (coaching) is being paid for by the grant we received from the Salem Keizer Education Foundation this past fall. The concert time was moved back to accommodate our swimmers, who have a very important meet at South Salem High. Here is the schedule for the day: Period 6 final - 7:30-8:55am Period 7 final - 9:15-10:40am Period 3 extra final - 11:30-1pm Honors String Quartet extra rehearsal with MBTC - 1:30-2:30pm Call time for Chamber (on stage to warmup) 4:45pm Call time for Sinfonietta (on stage to warmup) 5pm Call time for String Orchestra 5pm (orchestra room) Concert time - 5:30pm. Concert dress please (Chamber in Chamber outfits, everyone else in head to toe formal black attire, as per our concert dress code) 2) Music Beyond the Chamber Tomorrow, students will be coached all day by musicians from Music Beyond the Chamber and guest violinist Caius Oprea. Caius is a graduate of the Julliard School of Music and is husband of one of our violin coaches - Sigrun. Jessica, Jessica and Lauren, from Music Beyond the Chamber are all experienced musicians and dedicated chamber artists. PLEASE MAKE SURE TO ARRANGE RIDES TO ASSURE THAT EVERYONE IS ATTENDANCE - this will be a graded rehearsal (final grade!). 3) Symphony schedule next week There is no symphony on Tuesday or Thursday because of finals and the concert on the 31st. But there IS A SYMPHONY FINAL AT 11:30am ON WEDNESDAY THE 30th. All students are expected to attend in order to receive a 'final' grade! We will rehearse new and old pieces. 4) Last Chance "Live Review" podcast tomorrow The day for the "last chance live review concert" was changed to Friday Jan 25 - tomorrow after school at 2:30. I will show a live podcast of the St. Olaf symphony orchestra winter concert. If a student is unable to attend this after school event, please email me tonight and I will send the link to the podcast in an email tomorrow - to be viewed by the student at home over the weekend. ONLY ESSAY REVIEWS WILL BE ACCEPTED FOR THIS CONCERT. Reviews, typed and turned in or emailed, must be turned in on Monday the 28th for full credit. 5) Get those Theory assignments and reviews in! On Friday I will post current grades for all students. If students have not turned in Theory assignments, they will be accepted "late" up until Monday the 28th. Reviews of concerts seen in the past 2 weeks are due Monday Jan. 26 in class. Please check your intouch online gradebook and let me know if there are any concerns or issues with grades. (Piano Guys + Lindsey Stirling = Mission Impossible)  1) Waltz Night in 2 days - Friday!! On Friday is our biennial (every 2 years) event - Waltz Night, a "Black and White Evening." The evening begins at 6pm with everyone arriving. There are raffle items to check out ($1 raffle tickets available at the door) and dessert items available for purchase. At 6:30pm, everyone in attendance will receive a Waltz Lesson from a professional dance instructor (from Salem's RJ Dance Studios). After everyone has learned the steps, students going on the "Big Trip" will perform live Waltz Music for the rest of the evening. The Raffle will happen at the end of the evening, though you do not need to be in attendance to win. This is a wonderful event - please invite friends, neighbors, and loved ones! Students and parents, you have been sent emails requesting help with dessert items - please check your email. Students performing, you should know the schedule (check emails!). Formal or semi-formal attire required. Thank you to all who auditioned - congratulations! 3) Concert Tuesday - Symphony on the Band Concert All Symphony students - as you know, you are performing on Tuesday at the Band Concert. Parents - you are welcome to join us at West at 7pm to hear the Symphony orchestra perform Rimsky-Korsakov's Dance of the Tumblers at the Band Concert. Symphony will perform first on the concert. Students will be required to stay to hear their band colleagues perform. Please consult the calendar for more detailed info about Tuesday's schedule. 4) Last Chance "Live Review" next Thursday Calling all students who have not completed their Live Concert Review - next Thursday, Jan 24th at 2:30 in the orchestra room. We'll watch a podcast of a Live Concert from St. Olaf's University Orchestra where one of our alumni is performing in the top orchestra. We'll watch an hour of the concert and if you submit an essay review by Monday the 28th, the review will be accepted. There is also a live concert on Sunday the 27th you can attend, but it has a $20 ticket fee. REVIEWS ARE DUE BY MONDAY JANUARY 28! 5) Chamber Music concert Jan 31 - ALL STUDENTS All students will be involved in a beautiful concert featuring the artists of Music From Beyond the Chamber on January 31. Right now, all students have embarked on a Chamber Music unit where they're learning a movement of a piece in small chamber groups. They'll be coached by our local Salem musicians for 3 weeks and then on January 31 all students will be coached by these national musicians. In the evening, the students with the Chamber Musicians will perform a concert at West at 7pm. Please make sure you've cleared your calendar to see this exciting concert! 2) Symphony performs on the Band Concert - January 22, 7pm. 

All students perform at the Chamber Music Concert January 31 at 7pm.

3) Tomorrow, Friday Jan. 11, there is an Oregon Symphony concert in Salem at Smith Hall at Willamette University. There should be $5 student tickets available. Great concert  - a chance to see Andre Watts!! Please call the OR Sym office to confirm if there are tickets 503-364-0149

5) Waltz Night is January 18, 6-9pm. Tickets are now available. $10 for students or senior citizens. $15 for adults. $25 for a pair of adult tickets. . Parents - we will be having a bake sale and asking for donations. An email will go out about this in the next few days.
