Oregon Symphony’s Erin Furbee Visits West Salem Classroom

The West Salem High School Advanced Orchestra had a real treat when Oregon Symphony Assistant Concertmaster Erin Furbee came to work with them on their chamber music section. As part of the Oregon Symphony Association in Salem’s Master Coaching program, Furbee spent one class period with these young musicians in a master class format.
Students from one of West High’s Chamber Ensembles, The Lady Titan String Quartet, played while Ms. Furbee worked with them on bowing technique as well as musicality as the rest of the class observed. Zevon Smith, a senior who plays violin in the group compared the experience to painting, “I find that when it comes down to the music itself, Erin Furbee brings out the grace and beauty of it. The way she worked with my quartet group felt as if we ourselves were painting a watercolor picture with her guidance as the brush.”
For many young musicians working with professional performing artists can be rather daunting, but Ms. Silberman, Director of Orchestras at West Salem High School, believes whole-heartedly in making her students comfortable with these opportunities by integrating as many of these types of experiences into her curriculum. “I’m a huge proponent of bring the ‘real world’ of music right to the school!” said Silberman. Freshman Hayley Hicks agrees that these “real world” experiences are important saying “It was so exciting to work with her! I was a little nervous at first but she turned out to be extremely nice and she had a lot of good input. I think that time we got to spend with her was time well spent.”
Furbee, who in addition to her work with the Oregon Symphony, plays with a number of small chamber ensembles and encouraged the students to do the same.

1) The deadline for turning in your Live Review has been extended to Jan. 20. Just a reminder that *ALL* the info for format and guidelines for the review are on our website, student page. If anyone cannot find that info, I have it posted in class too. Chamber Orchestra students need to submit one live concert review and one other review - video, CD, or live concert.
2) On the blog, one message back from this newsletter, is a big list of webcasts that you can use for your live review if you were unable to attend a concert in the past 4 months. If you use a webcast for your 'live' review you *must* do a live review next semester. One cool webcast is a broadcast of Turandot - an opera that's staged with the actors/singers on stage *WITH* a live symphony orchestra... really neat.
3) All students in the program are currently working on a Chamber Music unit - they're all working in small chamber groups, working on their own, with my help, and with coaches (professional musicians from the area). All of these groups will perform on the day of their class final, during class time. I will video tape all the groups and hopefully within a few days post all the videos on our website. I will use first names of the students only, separated by class and will probably entitle the video with the name of the piece the students are performing. So, please check our website as soon as you get an email from me saying the videos are posted.
All Chamber Orchesta groups, and hopefully a select few other groups from the other orchestras, will be performing at our next concert: "An Evening of Chamber Music" downtown at the public library, Loucks Auditorium, Feb. 2, 7pm. More on that concert in the next email.
Our next big concert at West with all orchestras performing is the Spring Concert - March 16, 7pm.
4) All City auditions are on Wednesday Jan. 20 in the afternoon. All students who have signed up have their times listed in the room - if there are any questions, please contact me. There are still 4 students who have not paid the $7 fee... you know who you are. Good luck! We're hoping for a great presence this at All City!

Options for Live Review...
If you didn't complete your live review this semester, you may complete the review by listening to one of the symphony broadcasts from the links below. You'll need to listen to the whole concert and write up a complete review - either essay or survey format. But, you will not be allowed to do this next semester - you must go see a live concert in the next 4 months!
