Here are details: Dress - black from shoulder to toes. Seniors may wear anything they'd like that's formal Call time - 5:30pm on stage. Don't need to be dressed in black. Pizza dinner at 6:30pm, then you'll dress and be on stage by 7pm. PLEASE BRING HOME INSTRUMENTS! Senior parents - bring tissue! We'll invite you up on stage to give your graduate a flower before he/she plays our traditional senior farewell - Ashokan Farewell. PARENTS - Is anyone available to help with pizza Monday night? Maybe around 6:15pm????? 2) Concert review opportunity Sunday This Sunday, June 2, my singer-songwriter friend from Colorado, Darryl Purpose and I will be performing at the Hayloft Concert Series in East Salem. This is a fun evening of folk music... storytelling, good friends, enjoyable music. Please don't come if you're not intending on staying for the whole night. The Hayloft Concert series here in town is a much loved series. It takes place upstairs in an old hay loft on Sharon Moore's property in East Salem. People tend to come an hour or so early to reserve their seats and then picnic on Sharon's grounds. The concert is intimate - it's a definite 'listening audience'. West students, families and friends, are more than welcome, but these concerts often sell out just based on their regular members attending - so, if you'd like to attend, be serious about coming on time. If you would like to go, email my private email address and I'll give you the rest of the info: daryl@daryls.com 3) Last chance review after school Wednesday There is a special opportunity for all of you who did not get a chance to do a live review. The Skyros String Quartet from Nebraska is on tour in the area and they will perform at West at 2:30pm on Wednesday June 5. You may review this concert - it's a Win-Win for us all. By the way, even if you DID turn in your review, it's a great chance to hear a great string quartet. The review will be due Friday the 7th.  4) Final Assignment - due Tuesday You have an assignment due Tuesday June 4. The assignment has been handed out in class and you have the info on the blog. Everyone needs to turn in/email their info to Ms S by Tuesday June 4. Seniors will present that day - the rest of you will present Wednesday and Thursday. 5) Next Year Chamber meeting Monday June 10, 6:30pm Next year's Chamber group needs to have a PARENT STUDENT meeting to set schedules and expectations, and to talk about the possible trip next October. We'll meet Monday evening June 10 at 6:30pm in the orchestra room. All those in Chamber next year are expected to attend and have at least one parent there too. 6) Dresses and tuxes There will be a sign up list on the orchestra room door for you to let me know if you have clothes that belong to West. This mainly pertains to those in Symphony/Chamber. Here's some info about your black clothes, if you have them: Seniors - please wash and return your black dresses. Boys - if you have tuxes (pants or jackets) please return them to the closet!!! All others - if you dress/tux pants fit, keep them - mark that on the sheet on the door. If your dress doesn't fit, wash it, hang it up, and them mark that you need a new one on the sheet. We'll order new dresses and boys' clothing for those in Symphony/Chamber next October. 7) Do you have a West instrument at home? If you have a West instrument at home, I will need to count that instrument in our West inventory the last week of school. Orchestra Final: Performer or Composer Final Project – due June 4, 2013      Points 30

Objectives:

1.1              To learn more about a specific performer or composer

1.2              To use the internet to investigate – biographies, interviews, video clips, audio recordings, concert schedule, fan pages, histories, recordings

1.3              To write compellingly about a live performer by creating an interactive piece of media to display your knowledge

Final presentation: Turn in your project (make link accessible to Ms. S) by 2:30pm Tuesday June 4. Present your project in class June 4 (seniors and 1/3 of others) or June 5+6 (all others)

Project outline: You will choose a composer or performer in any genre of music. Using the internet or library sources, you need to research this composer or performer. You need to have the following information gathered:

• Important dates for this person (as a timeline)
• Important works they performed or composed
• Context about their lives – where do/did they live, when do/did they live, what influences are/were important to them, scope of their work (how many, where, etc…)
• Video and/or audio links online for us to see/hear
• A statement about their value as a composer/performer to the greater musical world
• A statement about their value to you
• Cite your sources, including anything you find on the internet

To share your information, you can present this in the following formats:

• Prezi – www.prezi.com
• Glog - http://www.glogster.com/
• Go Animate - http://goanimate.com/ or http://www.xtranormal.com/
• Poster (like the ones in our room) with a webquest turned into Ms S (with sheet of links and sources)
• Powerpoint Presentation with active links
• Video production (movie)
• Traditional paper report

Or, if you have another creative way you’d like to present your information, please talk with Ms. S before the due date.

Your project will be graded as follows:

30pts       All information is presented clearly, on time, using correct grammar and punctuation. Information gives the observer a full picture of this composer/performer. Sources are cited.

25pts       All information is presented, but project is either late or the information isn’t complete. Grammar and punctuation is correct.

20 pts      Some information is given about composer/performer. Grammar or punctuation isn’t always correct. Elements of research are missing

15 pts      Project is incomplete and/or late

This is our first ever Orchestras of the West. The show starts at 7pm and will conclude right around 8pm. Huge thanks to 'feeder' teachers Will Balch and Jeff Shippy to making this all happen. Parents are encouraged to attend (and all West students are playing). Students and parents have been emailed information regarding call times, dress, and flow of the concert.  2) OR Symphony Friday May 17 The OR Symphony in Salem has their last concert of the season tomorrow night, May 17. The concert is at 8pm at Smith Hall at Willamette University. Students should arrive around 7pm to pick up $5 tickets.  The soloist is violinist Jennifer Koh. This will be a great concert! More info: http://orsymphony.org/salem/  3) Uncle Bonsai concert May 19 There is a vocal-folk trio from Seattle called Uncle Bonsai coming to Salem this Sunday at 6:30pm to South Salem. This is a benefit concert for Temple Beth Sholom on Cunningham, off of Liberty, by the South Salem Roth's Sunnyside. Uncle Bonsai sing witty lyrics with amazing harmonies - their newest CD release is called "Monsters in the Closet" and is a slightly irreverent commentary on parenting. Local singer/songwriter Matt Price is opening for Uncle Bonsai - I will be playing violin with him (so, you actually may review this concert... how about that?!). Our record of 3 first place wins (Choir, Band, Symphony) has been accomplished 4 other times in OSAA history. And, in fact Sprague won 4 1st place music titles in 1998. But the record of 3 first place and 1 second place (Chamber) makes this year the 2nd best in OSAA history. And, the best record in the Salem Keizer district since 1998. Thanks, students and parents, for all that you do to support music in West Salem! 6) Boot camp dates - August 19/20 - 23!!! Orchestra Boot Camp is always 2 weeks before the start of school. Chamber retreat is on Monday August 19. Everyone else comes Tuesday Tuesday August 20 through Friday August 23 9am - 12pm. Chamber stays until 1pm Tuesday - Friday. This is a very important part of the Titan Orchestra spirit and musical culture. Students playing in any orchestra next year are 'required' to attend Boot Camp. The camp fee is $40, can be paid either at the end of this year or at Boot Camp registration, can be paid out of your student account, and can also be waived (4 hours of extra volunteer hours will be required of the family). Chamber played Shostakovich more exciting than ever. Followed that with a beautiful rendition of the Elgar. Then Playful Pizzicato was fun and, well, playful. Then they performed the Walczyk Haupango fantastically. Chamber placed 2nd!! See the videos below. Symphony did a great warmup and then played better than ever. Celebration fanfare came alive in the hall. Copland was sweet and musical. Rhosymedre was amazing - poignant and lovely. And, Jubilee blew the roof off the joint. This performance, along with great sight reading, was rewarded with a FIRST PLACE win. This is our first time presenting Orchestras of the West. All the West area string students from 4th -12th grade will play for parents and each other. West Salem students have some responsibilities both for set up and clean up - that email will go out to students Monday. 3) Go see OR Sym next Friday (revised from email) The Oregon Symphony performs Friday May 17 at 8pm at Smith Hall at Willamette University featuring violinist Jennifer Koh. This would be a great concert to review! Tickets should be $5 at the door, but go early in order to get a good seat. Here is more info: http://orsymphony.org/salem/ 4) Auditions for next year's groups almost complete Most students have already auditioned for next year's groups - those who prepared. Chamber final auditions are on Monday at 2:30 for about an hour. Lists will be posted by Thursday. 5) Assembly Friday On Friday May 17 there will be an Arts Assembly at West. Band, Choir and Orchestra will play for the whole school. Don't know yet if Symphony will play. Whomever plays will be excused for 3rd period to go set up in the Gym. Stay tuned to emails for more info. It's great the West gives us this assembly to play for the entire student body. 6) Added rehearsal for everyone Tuesday 2:25! Tuesday May 14 there is a quick rehearsal after school for EVERYBODY IN ORCHESTRA to go over the Pirates of the Caribbean piece we'll play all together. CORVALLIS – West Salem High School took first place for full orchestra and second for string orchestra Thursday night at the 2013 Orchestra State Championships at Oregon State University.

Todd Zimbelman and Daryl Silberman direct the full orchestra; Silberman directs the string orchestra.

South Salem High School, directed by Brandon Correa and Benjamin Stokes, took third in full orchestra.

In string orchestra completion, third place went to Sprague High School, directed by Steven Nelson; and fourth went to McNary High School, directed by Damien Berdakin.

The final listing for trophy winners was:

String orchestras: 1. Crescent Valley, Corvallis; 2. West Salem; 3. Sprague; 4. McNary; 5. Reynolds, Troutdale.

Full orchestras: 1. West Salem; 2. Sprague; 3. South Salem

Sixteen string orchestras and five symphony orchestras (strings plus brass, winds and percussion) competed in the daylong event, sponsored by the Oregon School Activities Association.

North High School’s symphony qualified for the competition but did not get one of the limited number of performance slots.

Each group’s performance was rated by three judges who could award up to 100 points apiece. An extra 60 points hinged on groups’ ability to sight-read unfamiliar music in a closed-to-the-public session.

The OSAAs 6A (large schools) music competition continues Friday with choir at George Fox University in Newberg. 6A bands will compete Saturday at OSU.

CORVALLIS – Midway through the 2013 Orchestra State Championships, adrenaline is high at Oregon State University’s LaSells Stewart Center.

String orchestras from North Salem, McNary and McKay high schools have taken the stage. Those from West Salem, Sprague and South Salem are coming up this afternoon.

The evening belongs to full symphony orchestras. Four of the five are from Salem-Keizer: McNary, South Salem, Sprague and West Salem. (The lone other district? David Douglas.)

The day has been especially thrilling for groups from McNary and McKay, which don’t make it to state with the regularity of some other Salem-Keizer schools.
“We were super excited” to learn the the McNary string orchestra would perform,” said bass player Taylor McCoin. “We just want to have fun, play music and play our hearts out.”

McKay director James Charnholm led his players through an exacting warmup, seeking to eliminate any chance of tone problems during their performance. “Challenge yourselves to find something new in this performance,” he encouraged his players just before they filed onto the stage.

Each group’s performance is rated by three judges who can award up to 100 points apiece. An extra 60 points hangs in the balance at the private sight-reading segment of the competition. Sight-reading is a private performance of a piece that the orchestra has never played before.

The awards ceremony is scheduled to start at 9 p.m. Many students have brought shorts and T shirts to stay until then.

Dress is full black. This concert is a great concert for parents and those not in Symphony or Chamber to come see. Pre-state concert features all the groups going to OSAA State Championships - Choir, Chamber, Symphony and Wind Ensemble/Band. Concert starts at 7pm. Musicians are expected to stay for the entire concert. Chamber plays 2nd on the concert, Symphony 3rd. Students - call time is 6:45pm to prep your instruments in the orchestra room. Sit in the auditorium by 6:55pm to watch the choir. I will send a detailed email out next week regarding all the information for State competition May 9. 2) Did you know? There was an article in the Statesman Journal recently about recreational music groups in town. I emailed reporter Barbara Curtin to thank her for writing that public interest story and she emailed me back something I didn't think about. Here's what she wrote to me, "For some reason, music/arts readers don't tend to use the online "comments" and "recommend" functions. But these days, web hits, comments, etc. are counted. Each time an article is read or commented on, it's like a vote for coverage of that topic. In this rapidly changing era for communications, the higher-ups watch this when deciding what to expand or cut down upon."  So, if you see an article, especially about the arts and music, please make sure you're commenting or recommending! 3) Hunchback of Notre Dame - GO SEE! The neatest cultural event is here in Salem this weekend - Master Chorale and Salem Chamber Orchestra have combined forces, with the beautiful big organ in Hudson Hall at Willamette University, to put on an event not to be missed. The 1920's silent film Hunchback of Notre Dame will be run on a screen above the musicians and we will be playing 2 hours of music as a soundtrack to this movie. The music selected by Dr. Klemme for this project is fantastic - works by Berlioz, Brahms, Beethoven, Poulenc, Faure... amazing music - lots of cool organ solos too! Students may review this for credit. You have 3 opportunities to see this incredible program: *Friday night (5/3) is the dress rehearsal at 7:30pm - students can get in for free, adults are $5 (here's the link for vouchers for students http://wp.me/a2m6oh-bc) *Saturday night (5/4) the concert is at 7pm (I just saw a Groupon yesterday that offered tickets to this concert - GREAT way to save some $!) *Sunday afternoon (5/5) the concert is at 3pm (but this one might be sold out - check the SCO website for more info:www.salemchamberorchestra.org) 4) 4th Grade String Festival tomorrow Students in Chamber Orchestra and Symphony put on the 4th Grade String Festival tomorrow. Here's the schedule: 12:30pm   Call time in the orchestra room for students (we'll work Pirates and go over the day's schedule) 1 - 1:30pm  4th grade students arrive 1:30 - 6  Festival (pizza and snacks will be provided) 6pm Concert  - 4th grade performs first, Chamber plays Shostakovich, then Symphony plays Pirates Concert concludes by 6:45pm (West students responsible for putting chairs and stands away) 5) Theory assignment due Monday There was a theory assignment that was supposed to be turned in May 2 - I've extended the deadline to Monday May 6. This is the last theory assignment - and it will be checked thoroughly by me. Students will be given an assessment of how good their rhythm skills are - this will help me plan for next year's theory packet. 6) Boot camp dates - August 19/20 - 23!!!
